When we come to the question that how to cultivate a young people for leadership, we always encounter such a dilemma that whether we instill him a sense of cooperation or competition. As some leaders attribute their success to their sense of competition and meanwhile the sense of cooperation is also indispensable to be a leader. We should give young people a sense of both competition and cooperation and make a balance of them.

The competition in our technologically and psychologically changing society is becoming more and more severe today; the sense of competition is indispensable for a leader in the procedure of the pursuit of success. In this competitive jungle, how can we stand out and be selected to be the leader? It is the sense of competition that makes us surpass peers and become eminent and outstanding and helps us win the position of management and leadership. Without it, we just satisfy with the little achievements, not so preeminent by comparing others. Thus we can hardly expect to be a leader without outstanding achievements.

Furthermore, the strong sense of competition is a necessary property the subordinates expect in their leader in that this is the assurance of their whole team's success. No matter in government, sports, industry, and the competition exists everywhere. The aim of any group is to survive and gain success in the competition with others .Thus same as the leader compete with peers to win the leadership; he should lead his whole subordinates to compete with people of the same business. The sense of competition and the determination to win of the leader is the team's achievement's guarantee. Therefore, to be a leader and to be a successful leader, the sense of competition is needed.

However, due to the more and more competitive society and the necessity of the sense of competition, we are more likely inclined to emphasize competition and meanwhile to ignore the importance of cooperation to be a leader. With the globalization and the complexity of industry, it is impossible to attain the success just by one person's effort but need the cooperation of a large group. For instance, in the research process, one can only research small part of the study and only the assembly of all people's effort can make a whole cake of knowledge. Though the leaders are prominent and outstanding of the people surround, it would to critical to require them know every step and do it all by themselves. Thus, the leader should make all subordinates work as a team and create a atmosphere of cooperation. If the leader himself is lack of sense of cooperation, how can we expect the team workers would learn to be cooperative? Besides, to win the trust and respect of his people, the sense of cooperation is also needed.

As both the competitive and cooperative qualities are necessary to be a successful leader, the society should prepare its young people for leadership by instilling the sense of competition and cooperation both. More important, the emphasis on only either one of them would be disastrous, for neither is dispensable for a leader. To avoid this, the educator must provide a balance of them
