TOPIC: ISSUE157 - "There is no such thing as purely objective observation. All observation is subjective; it is always guided by the observer's expectations or desires."
WORDS: 551 TIME: 0:55:00 DATE: 2006-12-5
The notion above is such an interesting philosophy dispute in the past and nowadays more and more people are realizing than observation is not purely subjective, but a combination of both objective and subjective procedure.
It is true that the sensation that each person gets from the observation of same incident or object is various. This is most obvious in the field of art. As we know, different people have different feelings and different comments on the same piece of artwork. For instance, some people would conclude that Picasso' paintings are ugly and childish, whereas those Picasso's fans would appreciate these gifted masterpieces and the propounding meanings of his works. The expectations and desires play so much influence on our interpretation and conclusion of our observation and then we come to the notion that all observation is subjective.
However, this conclusion is too arbitrary and superficial. Even the conclusion may vary among different people; the fundamental base of our observation is the objective object or phenomena we are observing. All our sensation, emotion, and conclusion are originating from the objective circumstance and without this fundamental base we can not gain any subjective observation. How can we get to the conclusion that the Picasso's paintings are just a pile of junkies without even seeing them? Some one would argue that dreams are the best interpretation of subjective observation. However, according the modern psychology, human's dreams are based on the dreamers' experience during daytime and the reflection of their psychological movements, which is also based on the observation of our objective nature. With the objective circumstance as the foundation, our observation becomes possible.
As a human being in this objective world, our expectation, desires, emotions are actually originates from our objective experience with the society and nature. Taking the example mentioned above again, different people gain different feelings from observation Picasso's paintings. Those one cannot understand his paintings may never see the paintings of this kind, and their conclusion formed because of the objective fact that they seldom watch this kind of paintings. Besides, with the past technological development, the cameras make the totally objective observations possible. In this sense, the observation is purely objective.
Further, if the all the observation is really subjective as the notion above, we will bog down in the nihilism, which means all values are groundless and there is nothing can be know or communicated, the whole human being's effort to understand our nature and conclude the basic laws of our universe would be of no avail. Our intellectual work, like science, technology, even from which we have gained much benefit is meaningless, because all the observation is subjective and there is no universal and objective law exist. We can not know anything truly because everyone’s observation is subjective and thus different. This is so ridiculous.
The sensation is the reflection of the objective observation in people's mind. Though it ostensibly seems that observation is guided by our expectations and desires, the observation is not purely subjective. If the notion is true, we will ironically find that our society’s endeavor to develop science, education and technology is meaningless. Without observation of objective surroundings, the observation is meaningless. In some sense, our expectations and motions are objective since they are the reaction of our objective experience with nature and society.
写完觉得没有想象的难写,但是想起来的例子太少了。。。。
