TOPIC: ISSUE47 - "Society does not place enough emphasis on the intellect-that is, on reasoning and other cognitive skills."
WORDS: 552 TIME: 1:30:10 DATE: 2006-12-14
1. Intellectual skills and non-intellectual skill 同样重要
2. 社会健康发展,需要Intellectual skills and non-intellectual skill 的平衡
3. 今天的社会,严重偏Intellectual skills的发展,因此需要更多的non-intellectual skill的重视
It can not be denied the crucial role that intellect plays in the society. Not for reasoning and other cognitive skills left by generations of scientists and thinkers, the modern industrial world could not have come into being. However, the whole thing becomes utterly absurd the moment we think that society does not place enough emphasis on the intellect. By contrast, much greater emphasis has been concentrated on the intellect from individuals to societies, whereas some essential non-intellectual skills are overlooked. Actually, in order to keep the society developing soundly, a balance should be kept between intellectual skills and non-intellectual skills.
Both Intellectual skills and non-intellectual skill are significant for human being in society. On the one hand, intellectual skills enjoy human being high levels of logical reasoning and cognitive skills. As the society grows, much more intellectual skills are demanded for us to adjust to the competition of the society. Take the corporations of IBM and Microsoft for instance, the only necessity of receiving a staff for them is several intellectual quiz. On the other hand, as human beings enjoy the beauty of music, visual arts and literature, people set them free spiritually, and actually obtain the ability of sensation, origination, creativity and inspiration, which play a useful part in work or study of human beings. As a matter of fact, at the same time, no one can guarantee to pass the quiz of the IBM without an ability of creativity and imagination.
A society cannot advance without intellect, yet it cannot keep well-being without non-cognitive skills too. In order to keep the society develop healthily, every individuals should keep a sound balance well between the two. One should be able to employ logical reasoning and other cognitive skills coping with his work or study in his vocation, yet non-intellectual skills are also necessarily demanded: listen to a sonata of Chopin to enlighten one's inspiration; taste a oil painting of Van gogh to make one's life enriched with zest, breaking through the dull life. Einstein is good example, but for the works of Mozart, no one would assert if the theory of relativity could be figured out in this would.
Both significant to society, intellectual and non-intellectual skills, however, receive unfair attention at present. The society urges one to study intellect since childhood, yet might miss the best time to cultivate one's skill of non-intellect such as visual arts, music or literature. As a consequence, a galaxy of people are waiting to construct a building while no one could design the blueprint of it; The college students who are major in arts cannot find jobs after graduating. Trying to avoid this trend, the society should grant non-intellectual skills their merited emphasis. People should be encouraged to nourish their interests in art or literature and should be enhanced the standard of admiring arts works. Moreover, those who do outstanding jobs in non-intellectual fields should receive no less recognition from the society than those in intellectual areas.
No one is willing to live in a world with nothing but reasoning equations, yet a society full of arts but lacks of thought of logic will also fate to face a disaster. Fortunately, the tragedy can be prevented effectively by just keeping a sound balance well between intellectual skills and non-intellectual skills in the society.
