Does not society place enough emphasis on the intellect? According to the speaker the answer is yes. While the society stresses some non-intellect, especially emotion, for example, whether the claim of the author is real or imagined depends on the attitude and actions of people, institutions and governments.

Admittedly, some field of the society neglect the importance of intellect. Firstly, the movie, which is people's most favorite ways of entertainment, prefers emotion to intellect. From TITANIC to Friends, to Father, they are the three hottest topics of film. And all of them relate to emotion. Moreover, media involve in this course of action as well. Advertisement, which is one of the most important part of media and affect us and our lives significantly, encourage us to follow our hearts, but not intellect. For example, one of the most popular headline--'Buy what you love' which see it in many websites such as eBay. It is a typical way that advises us to think emotionally instead of intellectually.

However, the author has not thoroughly examined the issue. Many available examples show that the society does indeed emphasize intellect. One notable example involves that the federal government of America supports the education, especially colleges and universities. Every year American government spends hundreds millions dollars to fund universities to encourage students to pursue knowledge and developing intellect. As America is the most influential country in the world, this action no doubt will affect the other countries. Another good example is not only the developed countries but also developing countries stress the importance of intellect such as China and India. For example, China will spend more than ten billions to higher education.

Not only governments but also different people pay more attention to the intellect. For example, Lijiacheng who is the richest and influential enterpriser of China, has donated twenty billions Yuan to many universities in China. And he promises to donate one in three of his property to developing education and providing more educational opportunities to poor students. A large number of social elites do the same things as Mr. Li. Not only celebrities but also common people stress the importance of intellect. All parent hope their child can be the best one in the class, especially in intellect. In light of the forgoing examples, we find that intellect remains the focusing problem of people.

In sum, although there is indeed a tendency that the society fails to regard intellect, the claim of the speaker is a little overstated. Human beings need a balance between intellect and emotion, but not incline to either. To some extent, just as the speaker said above, I think it needs a long way to achieve the balance, or perhaps we would need to continuously adapt to meet the balance.
