I am very pleased in recommending Mr. Meng Chao, a brilliant graduate of our department, to pursue his further study and research on your graduate program. Since Mr. Meng once studied mathematics modeling under my direction, I would like to provide some useful information to you.
I noticed Mr. Meng when he was admitted by USTC in 1998 because he was the only one who won the grade one outstanding student scholarship that year and became outstanding since then. In 2000 he took part in my seminar for preparing the Mathematical Modeling Contest, which gave me a chance to be familiar with him. At the beginning of my seminar, he told me that he didn't know some methods I have taught such as operational research. I recommended him one book, Operational Research (by Y. I. Gan). Then he began to study it by himself and often went forward to consult with me. Mr. Meng was so fascinated in it and had made progress rapidly. I was very surprised that when we took the second discuss, he had already had deep understanding about operational research. There are few people who could understand it within such a short period of time. Mr. Meng did it.
Another thing I want to mention is that Mr. Meng loves mathematics from the bottom of his heart. I can give you one example. You know ICM (the American Interdisciplinary Contest in Modeling) in 2002 was hold in the Spring Festival, the most important festival in China. Many students abandoned it. But Mr. Meng chose ICM in Hefei and gave up the chance to return back to Peking and get together with his parents and friends to share the happiest time. More than that, their team which included three members had won the gold medal in that contest.
Every teacher likes those who are intelligent. So do I. Compared with other students, Mr. Meng could think and resolve math problem in his personal way. I'm convinced that Mr. Meng will surely be an intelligent and innovative one in the future.
