Personal Statement
It seems like I have a not-so-lucky start in my life. I caught poliomyelitis when I was two years old. After 6 months of acupuncture treatments and 18 months of surgeries, my right leg was cured while my left not. Thanks to my mom, who taught me to count from 1 to 100 and do simple math while I had to lay in bed all day for the poor physical condition. It was then that I noticed I could find out answers quicker than my siblings. From then on, I displayed great interest in mathematics and dreamed to be a mathematician in the future.
To prepare for being a mathematician, it is necessary to have a healthier body in my case. So, I do a lot of activities such as swimming, table tennis, badminton and so on. In fact, I find I can do much better than many other people. People are very surprised that I can climb mountain for five hours without a break. Being able to climb mountains with my physical condition has given me more self-confidence. In short, I began a bright and happy childhood when I delved into mathematics and participated in many colorful outdoor activities.
From 1998 till now I have spent seven years in Mathematics Department at University of Science and Technology of China(USTC). I felt like I come to a big sea of mathematics where I can freely swim. In the first five-year’s undergrad program, I had taken a variety of fundamental courses to lay a solid foundation for my further study. Also I took some advanced courses to start my research in mathematics. In the following two years of graduate study, I learned how to apply my knowledge from undergrad study to research. So far I have published two papers, one by myself and the other co-authored(在老板的指导下). Recently I have contributed another paper to disperse mathematics. Sometimes I said to myself: hey, you are not doing well (((in getting a kindly high score得到高分))) on exams, but you are lucky for you seem to have the ability to make use of your knowledge and apply it.
Now I want to study something interesting that is related to my current field. In May of 2005, I have the honor to meet Doctor Luo Rong when he came to our university for a report. Doctor Luo, an assistant Professor of Middle Tennessee State University, graduated from your school. Through him, I learned that his dissertation advisor was Doctor Zhang, a professor of your department(他的研究包括了图论和算法等并做出了很多杰出的工作). I also find that Professor Zhang is doing research on bioinformatics and sequence analysis. I learned some about bioinformatics and know that the main mathematical tools for sequence analysis is graph theory, which is my research field now. (Also sequence analysis includes the progress finding a better algorithm and searching the sequence construct by computer program based on the algorithm.另外,序列分析有时候要做的是找
