Is it the artist not the critic provides the lasting value to the society as the speaker claims? I basically concede with this intention in that the artists create the works of art, meanwhile, the importance of critic should not be neglected because they help us better appreciate such value.

To begin with, in my eyes, lasting value means the pleasure, inspiration, aesthetic appreciation and other positive spiritual actions aroused by the natural or artificial works, and such value could not fade with the elapse of time. In other words, the lasting value is something that offers eternal benefits to individuals and to society. In this sense, the works of art are capable to provide the lasting value. In the one hand, some marvelous pieces of art could arouse our internal feelings such as pleasure, regret, remorse, and even guilt. In the face of some grand paintings, taking the Don Vince's Mona Lisa for example, we experience a great feeling of beauty, calmness, and some certain measure of groom. Our deepest feelings are aroused by the work of artist. Moreover, some inspiring works of art enhance our determination and courage. For example, with the inspiring symphony＂destiny" composed by Beethoven, we are more fearless to face the difficulties in life since the sound of melody have the magic power to arouse us courage and confidence.  

In the other hand, the works of art could reveal some otherwise hidden reality of the society. The artist always has a keen sensitivity to the outside world. They feel the trend, the change within the society and even the human nature, both the brightness and the darkness.  Then they reflect their feelings and thoughts through their artworks. Take movie, a main form of art in current society for example, and most documentary films, record the facts otherwise we would never know. Some other movies, such as independent movie, entirely express the ideas of the directors and therefore provide an original perspective to realize the world. Those movies may reflect the racial discrimination, the cultural confliction and the like, which is more effective to inform people to understand the real world. Since those works are the outputs of the artists, it is the artist that gives society something of lasting values.

However, the critics, who are still active in the fields of art, still have their own values. For example, after a new movie, especially a focused one, was released, we could find many recommendations about that movie. Form the recommendations, we could know better about whether the movie is worth to view. Or after watch a movie, you could get more information about the movie and find some features you have missed and therefore obtaining a profound appreciation about that movie. Further, since movies are closer to multitudes, we could easily understand the meanings and the usefulness of critics may not so crucial.  When come to other more abstract or professional forms of art, such as music , poet and painting, sometimes the critic act as an interpreter to tell us the values of those works of art since mostly ordinary people could merely understand or appreciate only parts of the artistic works. Sometimes we could only find the external appearance which is also superficial and miss the internal meaning which contains the lasting value.  In addition, not all the works of art has the lasting value. It is the critic that helps us to distinguish the masterpiece and the mediocre ones.

Though the critics possess beneficial functions mentioned above, they could mislead us in that they have limitations in knowledge and the level of appreciation. In addition, they may serve to certain political force. In order to achieve their political purpose, they may deceive the real values of some artworks. In these occasions, the words of the critics could not be entirely accepted, and we have to obtain personal thoughts to view the artistic issues.

In sum, the artists provide the lasting value while critics reveal and evaluate those values and help ordinary people to realize the power of arts. Both of them constitute an energetic and prosperous field of art.
