"For many years all the stores in our chain have stocked a wide variety of both domestic and imported cheeses. Last year, however, the five best-selling cheeses at our newest store were all domestic cheddar cheeses from Wisconsin. Furthermore, a recent survey by Cheeses of the World magazine indicates an increasing preference for domestic cheeses among its subscribers. Since our company can reduce expenses by limiting inventory, the best way to improve profits in all of our stores is to discontinue stocking many of our varieties of imported cheese and concentrate primarily on domestic cheeses."

The memo from president suggests that the cheese stores should not stock many varieties of imported cheeses and concentrate primarily on domestic cheeses. It might be a good suggestion, however, the lack of evidence and unpersuasive reasoning lend the suggestion unsound to me.

To begin with, the president provides assumes that the import cheeses are not popular base on two facts, separately, the five best-selling cheeses at newest store were all domestic and the magazine indication the increasing preference of domestic cheeses among its subscribers. However, both of the evidence is unconvincing.

On the one hand, the memo only mentions the top five best selling cheeses, what about other? It is possible though not ranking the top five, the import cheeses are still sold well. The president have to provide more information, especially the imported ones rather than only top five to persuade us the low popularity of imported cheeses. In addition, the best-selling cheeses are merely best ones of the newest store. It is unwise to make any conclusion based on the information of only one store. The people in other places may have different interests in cheeses, and it is possible that imported cheeses are popular in other stores in the chain therefore the suggestion of discontinuing the stocking may harm the profit.

On the other hand, the survey of the magazine may not precisely reflect the real preference of the customers. In the first place, there is no indication to illustrate the number of subscribes of that magazine. It is possible that only a few of people read that magazine and the result of the survey is not representative. Or perhaps the magazine is a local one that could only be subscribed by a limited range of people, therefore the opinion only represent the interests of people living that certain area. In the second place, the survey only indicate that the preference of domestic cheeses is increasing, whereas such increasing does not necessary means that the number of people prefer domestic cheeses are overwhelming the ones who like imported cheeses, or otherwise the imported cheeses are not popular any more. It is entirely possible that people like both domestic and imported cheeses and the imported cheeses are still occupying a certain share of market.

Moreover, the president suggests that it is the best way to improve profits, whereas it is probably not the case.  The president fails to provide any information about the profit, even if the amount of sold imported cheeses may not high, perhaps it is more profitable than others since the imported cheeses are much more expensive that others. Besides, there are myriad of other approaches could enhance profit, such as adopting more advertisements, implement new means of selling such as online sales and telephone sales. Absent taking into account of other possible approaches, it is too hasty to conclude that this one is the best way.

In sum, the president's suggestion is flawed in several points. To better persuade me, the president has to offer more information about whether the imported cheeses are unpopular and could not make satisfying profits. He also has to prove us that to discontinue those cheeses is the best approach.
