38."In the age of television, reading books is not as important as it once was. People can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books."
提纲:disagree
1. admittedly, television programs are more vivid and more convenient than books for us to learn. E.g. discovery
2. most television programs are entertainments not educations, for the profitable goal. E.g. Soap opera, advertisement
3. reading books can give us time to review and ponder, provide us space to imagine, which is impressive to us, and that is a necessary factor of study.
In the contemporary technological society, leading to the promotion of human’s depending on technological productions, like television. I acknowledge television has become an important part of our daily life, and we can learn much from it. Nonetheless, we should not expand the function of television too far or even compare it with the book, as the speaker’s statement that people can learn as much by watching televisions as they can by reading books, which is totally wrong for magnifying the function of television and overlooking the particular advantages of book.
Admittedly, television programs are more vivid and more convenient, their image are legible and direct, which can be effortlessly and rapidly learned, especially for the children who just at the beginning of study. Consider intelligible examples, such as a television program Discovery. This program is popular, holding a high audience rating, which is not only because it open windows to other lives, to remote areas of the world, and to history in the making but also for its abundant knowledge and easily to learn. Accordingly, television programs are accepted by the public at the advantage of its intelligible and manifest. Indeed, we can gain much by watching televisions, but this is not to say its benefit equal to that we get from reading books.
However, the shortcomings of television programs are also apparent. As is widely known, TV stations are operated for profit, consequently nowadays more and more television programs, for profitable, are turn to entertainments not educational ones as before, which can attract more audiences. To illustrate this point clearly, we can see that the soap opera, a major agent of such change. It is the fun, without any knowledge, which the soap opera can bring to us. Nonetheless, there is no doubt that as long as audiences like, as long as it can create merit, TV stations would like to follow. The increasing amount of advertisement is another example, for benefit likewise. These compelling evidences demonstrate beyond any reasonable doubt that television programs are more like amusement than education, thus we are not supposed to replace the books by television programs to learn knowledge.
Moreover, reading books has some particular advantages that it gives us time to review and ponder, which is impressive to us and it is effective for studying. Consider, as an example, every scientist his/her achievement was resulted from reflecting times without number, which only the book can provide for us. Besides, reading books supply sufficient space for our imagination, and that is the very factor artists need. Accordingly, reading books is as important as, if not more than, it once was, and that its status can’t be replaced by television programs or any other method.
Accounting for all the factors discussed above, we may securely come to the conclusion that although, watching television can provide vivid and legible image for us, but it does not make so much benefit on learning as compared with reading books. In the final analysis, even if in the age of television, we can not pay too much emphasis on watching televisions and overlook reading books at the same time, reading books is still important now.
