TOPIC: ISSUE48 - "The study of history places too much emphasis on individuals. The most significant events and trends in history were made possible not by the famous few, but by groups of people whose identities have long been forgotten."

Looking back at the long history of our human beings, we always are amazed at the brilliant and famous people's wisdom and courage. After all, they are representative of their time and nations. However, meanwhile we should not ignore the fact that these significant events are made by the long forgotten ordinary people.
At the every significant change of the society or people's concepts, there must someone preeminent and outstanding that leads the process of the transformation. For instance, we can hardly imagine the Civil War in American history without Lincoln’s leadership. It is he leads American people to the democratic society and gave black people liberty. If there not no these famous and outstanding people to lead these events, it may would not happen would or would not happen at that time. Besides, some transformations became possible because of the genius’ creative ideas. The best example to illustrate this point is Gandhi and Einstein, who obtain high reputations in their fields. The India nonviolence resistance to the English colony at last became successful without war due to the leading of the "holly hero" of Indian, Gandhi. Einstein, who is also brought the Physics into a whole new world, gave so much contribution to the development of Physics. Thus, the famous few people play so crucial role in the human history.
Furthermore, when we study the history, it is wise to study the events of that famous few, who can representative of the class he belong to and the trends of that time. Whether people are aware or not, they are bound to a certain class and a kind of philosophy when they take part in social issues. In this sense, we can learn from the leading people who are the best person to present his class and his group. We can draw the ideas, concepts and development trends from the ideas or works of them. What is the best than the direct materials of leading people to study the history of certain events? It is from the Washington to Lincoln that we learn the spirits of democracy. Thus, it is not curious that people are always paying more attention to these famous few people than to the common publics.
However, at the same time, we should ignore the importance of ordinary people who make the history possible and be leery on the tendency of becoming heroism. Though these leading people bring creative ideas and concepts to us or lead our development process in right ways, we could not forget that without the support of the masses, all this novel and creative ideas would be vain and the famous people's ability would only be hidden in their works but can not become possible in the real world, which is obvious especially in the political fields. Any political leaders need certain group of people to help him to fulfill his political aims and goals. The myriads wars between nations or inside a nation in the history enrolled millions of people in and millions of people died and this disaster remembered by us. We would never forget people who died during the Second World War in the last century. When giving high praise to those brave commanders to fight with the Fascists, we should not forget these ordinary soldiers whose names already disappeared with the wind of time. Besides, we should also be leery on the heroism when we study the history. And the best way to avoid this is to be aware of the importance of common masses.
In sum, I admit that through the study of these famous few people we can learn much of that time, we should not ignore the importance of masses. |
