Argrument 47

In this argument, the author concluds that a volvanic eruption casued the suddenly cooling of weahter. To support this conclusion, the author points out that the reasons for suddenly cooling are volcanic eruption and a meteorite colliding with Earth.In the mean time ,the author cites that no record aboat bring flash of meteorite collision was found and  a loud boom was mentioned in historical records. The author’s agrument is problematic in several respects, rendering the argument unconvincing as it stands.


To begin with, the author assumes that volcanic eruption and meteorite colliding are the only two possibility which caused the weather suddenly cooler.However,the author provides no evidence that this is the case. Commensense tells me that climatic change is a complicated issue. Not only natural phenomena but human activity influende the weather. Perhaps a large-scale chemic matter’s buring cause the weather cooler. Without specify scientific explation, the author can not convince me that the volcanic eruption and meteorite colliding are the only explation about weather change.

Even if the author’s assumpation about the reasons of climate change is correct,that the author claims that no meteoric collision occur based on no historical record is unconvincing .It is entirely impossible that the metoroc collision happended in night and no people observered that. Even,perhaps in the mid-16th, people’s knowledge about metoroc collison was so little that they did not aware that a sudden bright flash of light was created by metoric collsion and deserved to be written down. In these conditons, the author can concluds that no metoric collsion occurred .

Finally, the author assumes that the loud boom in historical records comes from a volcannic eruption.However, this is not necessnarily the case. It is entirly possibe that the loud was produced by other geologic changes ,such as diastrophism. So the volcanic eruption may be not happened that time.


In conclusion, the conclusion about the reason of the weahter cool is not well supported. To make this conclusion more persuasive,the author must provide clear evidence that the volcannic eruption actually happened during the process of weather cooling and the relationship between volcanic eruption and weather cooling.
