The world is a whole and the division of fields is factitious activity, in fact, every field relates with each other. So I fundamentally agree with this assertion that significant advances in a study field require knowledge and experience form various fields.
When mathematics was introduced into the field of economics by mathematician, John Nash, a great change happened in this field. Mathematics formed an alliance with economics as the tools of mathematical analysis, algebra, probability, and statistics illuminated economic theories. A specialty called econometrics links enormous numbers of equations to form mathematical models for use as forecasting tools. In 1973 Scholes and Black consulted with Merton in developing a formula for valuing stock options that became known as the Black-Scholes formula which caused a financial revolution in Wall Street.
As a computer programmer, I am very familiar with this field. Many different kinds of knowledge contribute to the development of computer science. First, the invention of computer derives from the demand of complex mathematical operation. LSI, which makes computer hardware smaller and smaller, is the contribution of electronic engineering and physics. Another notable example involves the field of computer image processing which is used broadly in architectural design, art, medical treatment and video games. Before using image processing technology, we should be familiar with algebra, biology and psychology, which work together to cheat our eyes by a computer image.
With the development of science and technology, more and more new disciplines present. Such as Biomedical Engineering, application of engineering principles to the fields of biology and medicine, as in the development of aids or replacements for defective or missing body organ, concerns the chemical interactions between the human body and artificial materials that, implanted into life tissue, may provoke adverse reaction or rejection. For example, the most dramatic biochemical engineering feat, however, has been the design and construction of the Jarvik Artificial Heart for patients with incurable heart diseases. In 1982, Seattle dentist Dr. Barney Clark was the first person implanted with the Jarvik-7, an artificial heart intended to last a lifetime. William DeVries an American surgeon performed the surgery. The Jarvik-7 artificial heart was designed by Robert Jarvik.
Finally, the other side of the coin, so to speak, is not examined in the statement. Development of any kind of discipline depends not only on the achievement from other subjects but on the experience and study of its own. As economics discussed above, although the introduction of game theory by Nash bring a great change in economics study, the advance of economics also depend on the classical economic theory, like The Wealth of Nations and so on.
There is no absolutely independent discipline in modern science. According to a recent survey, there are more than two thousandinterdisciplinary research today. Therefore, making significant improvement without outsiders help from other fields might be very hard in modern discipline study.
