11. "All nations should help support the development of a global university designed to engage students in the process of solving the world's most persistent social problems."
所有的国家都应该支持发展一所全球性的大学,它的主要目的是要让学生们致力于解决世界上最难缠的社会问题。
全球化问题之全球解难大学
平衡观点,偏同意,建立这样的大学,但是有些问题需要注意
Outline:
5. 总结
I fundamentally agree with the suggestion of building a global university which should be a primary means of educating the students required to solve the most persistent social problems of the world. However, the statement overlooks the actual factors, which result in the proposal to a hard mission.
In their long history, universities are always the locus of the scientific discoveries that move a nation forward. However, a global university recruits students from around the world who represent the entire spectrum of cultures and values, sends their students abroad to prepare them for global careers. This university, offering course of study that address challenges of interconnected world and helping to solve common problems different countries suffer, should benefit all humanity.
Global university can help to establish a common ground or reach a consensus on the increasing environmental problems such as global warming, which most scientists believe results, at least in part, from human activities. The chief cause of this warming is thought to be the burning of fossil fuels, such as coal, oil and natural gas, which releases into atmosphere carbon dioxide and other substances know as greenhouses gases. All of main industry countries which contribute to these kinds of gas and developing countries which covered by rainforest, like Brazil, should work together in a platform provided by global university to solve this problem. Another example involves outer space exploration, which need worldwide participation because outer space belongs to not only the super country but the entire human being.
Another example is the conflict between Israel and Arabic world which has continued more than several centuries. Building a global university might be a powerful force for mutual understanding among these countries, and thereby contributes to the solution and mitigation of this conflicts which derive from the difference of culture or race because in a global university, there are many opportunities for students form either Israel or Arabia to understand each other's culture and benefits, and sociologists from Arabia should cooperate with experts from Israel make peace research influencing their countries.
Although such a university might benefit us more, foundation of such a university and operate it is very difficult. The first trouble is how to manage it. Since the nation power of different nations varies greatly, therefore it is entirely possible that such a global university is mainly controlled by several developed countries, which have ability to afford more cost of this university and provide more professors and facilities to it. Another problem is that the emphasis of different countries is dissimilar, so which problem should be solved firstly will bring drastic disputations. For example, terrorism maybe the top problem need to be solved for America; whereas, for Israel and Pakistan, what should to deal with firstly maybe the problem of racial conflict. So this university should create equality of opportunity to not only the few super countries but also most developing countries.
In modern times, a global university might be a valuable means for human to solve numerous persistent society problems. Nevertheless, all the participating nations should be able to overcome whatever procedural and political obstacles that might stand in the way of success and the administration of this university should be open to all participators, if so, a global university might go along way toward solving many of the world's pressing social problems. |
