TOPIC: ISSUE185 - "Scandals-whether in politics, academia, or other areas-can be useful. They focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could."
WORDS: 390 DATE: 2006-12-29
The speaker asserts that scandals can be useful whether in politics, academia, or other areas, because they focus our attention on problems in ways that on speaker or reformer ever could. I agree insofar as scandals sometimes contribute to reveal corruption. However, in my view, overemphasizing scandals may cause greater loss to the society.论据明确
First of all, the statement that scandals can be useful under some circumstances is quite compelling. That's because scandals can sometimes serve to expose the political issues, which help to supervise the behavior of corruption. To illustrate this clearly, here is an instance that is persuasive. Water gate scandal, which is ended in the first resignation of a president in American history, engenders a great effect to America and even to the whole world. Although the incident led to such result, it strikes the behavior of corruption and also receives the support of public如果要考究的话,水门事件本事是不会得到公众的支持的,应该是对于事件的调查. With the exposure of such scandal, the system will be more consummate. Accordingly, scandals can be useful in some situations.
However, I disapprove the assertion because it neglects the negative effect brought by scandals. It is possible that scandals attract too much attention of us, which make us so confused that public may emphasize the leading actors' defects instead of treating their contribution justly. Take the former president of United States, Bill Clinton. The revelation of the sexual scandal between Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky make Clinton's eight-year political career under the drop shadow. 同时强调或者提及一下Clinton任内的功绩会更有力些 What's more 用递进不太确切,个人觉得drop shadow和 neglect of contribution与并列关系较相近, the incident may lead to the neglect of the former president's contribution. Thus, scandals may bring great undesirable effect to the leading actor of the incident.
On the other hand, scandals can sometimes serve to divert our attention from pressing social problems. In order to gain more profit, media reports a myriad of scandals about celebrities to attract audiences. Many of these scandals are useless (useless for what 不太明确,不如改用pointless或者 insignificant), but they are everywhere and distract our attention so that we cannot focus our energy and pay enough attention to the pressing social problems. Therefore, the development of our society will be influenced if our lives are full of scandals.
In sum, I concede that scandals sometimes bring the positive effect to our society. However, the speaker overrates the positive influence of scandals. In the final analysis, we should treat scandals in a dialectic way which thoroughly measures both positive and negative effect.
Summary comments:
1. 论据鲜明,结构清晰
2. 语言准确,词汇丰富
3. 事例充足
4. 看是楼主已经形成了自己的写作模板,这是我要好好学习的,我的这篇i就是限时的失败之作 |
