"Such nonmainstream areas of inquiry as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits play a vital role in society by satisfying human needs that are not addressed by mainstream science."
正文:
Nowadays as we can see, there are many magazines, books, websites telling fortune, arguing future and testing unknown things, this has intrigued lots of people. Some are for it and others don’t. In my opinion, I suppose that such nonmainstream areas of inquiry as astrology, fortune-telling and psychic and paranormal pursuits plays a big but never vital role in any sense, and it is fading out of our life with the development of science.
The main reason for the existence of nonmainstream areas of inquiry is that the knowledge we know is limited, the current scientific knowledge cannot explain all the things we encounter, that is why people resort to astrology and the like to get their answer they want to know.
Undoubtedly, the paranormal pursuits played an important role in the past. At that time, People cannot know why there is the sun, the moon, and the star, cannot know why it rained a lot last year but extremely dry this year. If an ellipsis happened, they supposed that it is the supernatural powering controlling it. There is a true story of what is probably the most famous eclipse in 585 B.C. ended a five-year war between the Lydians and the Medes. These two Middle Eastern armies were locked in battle when "the day was turned into night." The sight was startling enough to cause both nations to stop fighting at once. They regarded the phenomenon as the God’s will against their fight. In the time when people were lack of knowledge, only by resorting to the paranormal pursuits can people explain the things happen around them, therefore the nonmainstream area prevailed in people’s life in ancient times.
Today, the science has developed greatly and we know much better than the ancients, but why the paranormal pursuits are still popular in people’ life?――as you may ask. Definitely, humans explored a lot and made a great progress in science, but only in natural science like chemistry, physics, mathematics, astronomy etc, while the the field of psychology is still in the primitive period just like the natural science in ancient times. The science of psychology was initiated in 1879, and is only in it’s infantry period. We know from Maslow’s hierarchy theory of needs that the basic needs of human base on 5 levels——physiological needs, safety needs, needs of love, affection and belongings, needs for esteem, needs for self-actualization. The needs of human differentiate according to different level of their life. Nowadays, many people can satisfy their basic material needs and seek to the satisfaction of their psychological needs. They want to know what is going to happen to the relationship between their intimate friends and themselves, want to know what kind of people they are going to be, want to know what job they will choose, what life they will have, and so on. They faced pressures and stresses from so many uncertainties and insecurities in daily lives, and seek ways to relieve and catharsis them: nonmainstream areas of inquiry provide such a way while present psychological science still cannot satisfy them. Therefore, the phenomenon of the popularity of paranormal pursuits is not inconceivable.
In conclusion, the popularity of nonmainstream areas of inquiry is the result of the barrenness of knowledge of human beings. They may provide a way for people to explain things that they cannot perceive by present science, or to relieve themselves from uncertainties, but they are not scientific, and may cause people to become passive and pessimistic towards life. They did play a big role in the society, but with the exploring to the unknown world by human beings and the development of the science, those nonmainstream fields will fade out. |
