TOPIC: ARGUMENT140 - The following appeared in a report of the Committee on Faculty Promotions and Salaries at Elm City University.

"During her seventeen years as a professor of botany, Professor Thomas has proved herself to be well worth her annual salary of $50,000. Her classes are among the largest at the university, demonstrating her popularity among students. Moreover, the money she has brought to the university in research grants has exceeded her salary in each of the last two years. Therefore, in consideration of Professor Thomas' demonstrated teaching and research abilities, we recommend that she receive a $10,000 raise and a promotion to Department Chairperson; without such a raise and promotion, we fear that Professor Thomas will leave Elm City University for another college."

While the professor Thomas is praised of the largest classes in the campus and considerable research funds bringing, the reporter should to make out that the only two reasons are not sound evidence to demonstrate Thomas has an excellent competence of teaching and research. In addition, the reporter also should to consider other facets of the professor before recommending that she should be offered both a promotion to Department chairman and a salary raise. Therefore, to prove how groundless this report is I will point out several logical flaws following.   90



For one thing, the assumption is that because Thomas' classes are among the top largest ones at Elm City University, her teaching skills and her popularity among students are equally laudable. Unfortunately, this is often not the case. The sizes of classes are not always accurate reflect the teacher's charming, teaching skills or acceptable level. Sometimes, they are also influenced by the curriculum schedule arrangement of the Faculty. It is equally possible that those students who are take part in a particular class only to earn some credit hours. Just like botany, one subject Professor Thomas engaged in, seems to be a relative easier one than others to obtain credit hour. So, it is entirely possible that the committee is overestimates Thomas' capacity. 122



For another, the reporter commits a fallacy of establishing the causal relationship between absorbing research grants and research abilities. Of course, it is an appreciate matter of Thomas bringing research grants to the university. But there is still has questions opening. For instance, how and where are these money used? Spending on dealing with social intercourse or buying new equipments and then do nothing? Both the two are not the answer which the research abilities needed. In fact, in face of such limited evidence, we could make any guesses at how the money are expending by Thomas. Consequently, the committee had better to try its best to seek for a reasonable explanation that, why should the larger research grants means to the higher research abilities?



Finally, even though Professor Thomas really has identified teaching and research abilities, it does not mean that she should receive the $10,000 raise and a promotion to Department Chairperson. Because I could not affirm that whether Thomas really has absolute advantages to be the Chairperson of her Department, when she compared with the other professors whose any information is failed to be listed. It is a possibility that someone is the same as Thomas as competent to absorb research grants, meanwhile, he is in a superior position of administrant ability compared with the latter. Obviously, the committee should to recommend such a person but not professor Thomas.



In sum, those discussions above have brought some crucial problems to the notice of the committee. To strengthen this report, the reporter should provides more concrete evidence to convince me that professor Thomas has demonstrated teaching and research abilities. To better evaluate the recommendation, I need more information concerning the other professors involved in the Faculty Promotions and Salaries activities, in order to make sure that Thomas has no less advantages than the others.
