ARGUMENT140 - The following appeared in a report of the Committee on Faculty Promotions and Salaries at Elm City University.
"During her seventeen years as a professor of botany, Professor Thomas has proved herself to be well worth her annual salary of $50,000. Her classes are among the largest at the university, demonstrating her popularity among students. Moreover, the money she has brought to the university in research grants has exceeded her salary in each of the last two years. Therefore, in consideration of Professor Thomas' demonstrated teaching and research abilities, we recommend that she receive a $10,000 raise and a promotion to Department Chairperson; without such a raise and promotion, we fear that Professor Thomas will leave Elm City University for another college."
WORDS: 456
Outline:
1.       班级大不代表流行度高。
2.       草率推广,捐助费用高不代表能力强。
3.       即使如此,没有要离去的迹象,即使要走,作者的建议欠妥。

In this report, the author claims that in order to prevent Professor Thomas leave Elm City University, it is necessary to offer her a $10000 raise and a promotion to department Chairperson. To support this conclusion, the author cites that Professor Thomas’ classes are among the largest at the university. And he also states that the money the professor brought has exceeded her salary in each of the two years. However, the author’s assertion is problematic in several respects, rendering the argument unconvincing as it stands.

First of all, the fact that Professor Thomas' classes are among the largest at the university cannot logically indicates that her popularity among students is higher than other teacher. It is true that she conducts the largest classes in the university, but it is likely that the study of botany calls for such a huge classes which is much bigger than the other classes. Or perhaps the number of professors in the study of botany is so small that their classes are much larger than the others. Without examing and ruling out such possibilities, the author cannot simply draw his conclusion that the professor enjoys her high popularity among the students.

In addition, the author commits a fallacy of hasty generalization. the money brought to the university in research grants is not a good indication of whether one professor has high ability in teaching or research. As we know, such abilities depends on several major factors other than research granrts money .For instance, high ability in research and teaching involving research standard, creativity and the quantity and quality of papers, all of which are ignored by the author. Without taking into account such factors, the author cannot justifiable conclude that Professor Thomas has high teaching and research abilities.

Finally, even though Professor Thomas enjoy a high level of popularity among the students and has better abilities in teaching and research, the author fails to convince us that it is essential to give the professor a 10000 raise and a promotion to Department Chairman. There is no evidence pointing out that Professor Thomas will leave Elm City University for any other universities. Even if she is about to leave, the recommendation is ungrounded. Perhaps $10000 raise is much more than she deserves. Or it is entirely possible that she does not adapt to the position of a department chairperson. Without compelling evidence that this suggestion is actually necessary, the author convinces us little.

To sum up, the argument is illogically reasoned as it stands. To bolster it the author must provide clear evidence that the professor has a high popularity in the university, and that the Professor has much higher teaching and researching abilities than the other professors. To better assess the argument we would need to know more compelling evidence that unless received a $10000 raise and a promotion to department chairperson, the professor Thomas would not leave Elm City University for another university.

In this report, the author claims that in order to prevent Professor Thomas leave[from leaving] Elm City University, it is necessary to offer her a $10000 raise and a promotion to department Chairperson.

It is true that she conducts the largest classes in the university[无谓的重复], but it is likely that the study of botany calls for such a huge classes[no‘-s’] which is much bigger than the other classes. Or perhaps the number of professors in the study of botany is so small that their classes are much larger than the others. Without examing and ruling out such possibilities, the author cannot simply draw his conclusion that the professor enjoys her high popularity [?] among the students.

In addition, the author commits a fallacy of hasty generalization [about her teaching ability]. The money brought to the university in research grants is not a good indication of whether one professor has high ability in teaching or research. As we know, such abilities depends on several major factors other than research granrts[grants] money[del, grants本来就包含了钱] .For instance, high ability in research and teaching involving research standard, creativity and the quantity and quality of papers, all of which are ignored by the author.[主句的谓语在哪里?] Without taking into account such factors, the author cannot justifiable [justifiably] conclude that Professor Thomas has high teaching and research abilities.

Finally, even though[用法错误:虽然和even if都翻译为“即使”,但even if后面接的是假设,真实与否不知道;even though后面接的是真实情况,比如“even though在决赛上因为顶了那个意大利傻x后卫而被红牌罚下,齐达内还是获得了金球奖。”] Professor Thomas enjoy[-s] a high level of popularity among the students and has better abilities in teaching and research, the author fails to convince us that it is essential to give the professor a 10000 raise and a promotion to Department Chairman. There is no evidence pointing out that Professor Thomas will leave Elm City University for any other universities[单数,要到也只到的了一所]. Even if she is about to leave, the recommendation is ungrounded.[段内的递进,用的不错~] Perhaps $10000 raise is much more than she deserves.

To better assess the argument we would need to know more compelling evidence that unless received a $10000 raise and a promotion to department chairperson, the professor Thomas would not[will,去掉not] leave Elm City University for another university.
