TOPIC: ISSUE50 - "In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach."

Though the purpose of the speaker is sound, his or her recommendation is too arbitrary. Theoretically, working in the professions which has relation with the courses they teach would enrich the faculty's experience so that they can give the college students more useful things. But this conclusion could not go far, there should be some exceptions and confines when it comes into practice.

Working outside is a reciprocal process. On one side, the teachers put their theories into practice, and change the knowledge into production. On the other side, the teachers testify their theories in the reality; moreover, they could learn the latest proceeding in the field they focus on, and keep the pace with the development of the science.

When they teachers acquire the newest information, they can inform the students to compensate the scarce and lag of the textbooks in the academic learning. As the knowledge is updating everyday at a dramatically rate, staying in the college without contacting with the society, even the most excellent professor will fall behind in the regions he or she was once specialize. As a result, they may become stubborn and could not satisfy the need of the students.

The teachers' experience in working can make their instruction in the classroom more vivid and attractive. Students often complain the theories are abstract and difficult to understand. If the teachers give the concrete examples on how these theories applied in the life, the students are more likely to comprehend and become immersed in studying it. Many students would like to say that the most popular teachers are those have lots of stories and can illustrate the absurd principles.

After teachers go into the working society, they could acknowledge the qualifications of a member in those fields. They thus could provide suggestions to students for finding a job. More important, they can adjust their ways and contents of teaching, so that the students can learn skills for future jobs.

Nevertheless, as every coin has two sides, working outside is not beneficial enough. Consider there are most basic researches which have not application in the economical society. Where the faculties in these fields work outside the academies? What they should do is devote to the academic studies and to explore the nature of the world, not related to make money. Working in a interest-oriented company offer no help in the teaching.

Provided the teachers find a related job outside the colleges or universities, the overdue working may be detrimental to their quality of instruction. Take another work means they must reduce their time on preparing the class, revising the homework, and arranging discuss with the students. Without enough time, they could not provide sufficient instruction on students, let alone improve the instruction quality.

Therefore, while as to the fundamental fields, working outside appear not appealing, as to the applied disciplines, working outside the school in a limited conditions would help the teachers more experiential in the researches as well as professions, so to give better instructions, suggestions, and guidelines to students. How to maximize the positive effect and minimize the negative impact depends on the teachers' main intention and how they allocate their time.
