According to the speaker, although old buildings have considerable values in preserving the record of history, they should give precedence to the current usage. I concede that this claim has some merits under certain conditions. However, overestimating the utilitarian objectives would undermine not only the buildings themselves but also the whole historic and even cultural values these buildings represent.

Admittedly, in many cities which have long history, there are many past buildings which are constructed in early periods and cannot be effectively used nowadays. Thus, to certain extent, these buildings restrict the development of these cities in terms of modernization. Therefore, the municipal government has the responsibility to destruct these old buildings in order to acquire enough ground to build up modern ones. One apt illustration to this point involves the reconstruction in Beijing--the location of 2008 Olympic Games. As we all know, Beijing has more than two thousands year's history, and are full of old buildings. Beijing government hasto abandon these relics of history and construct new ones for the coming Olympics Games.

However, we should preserve rather than destruct the old buildings with respect to some valuable buildings especially which can represent any nation's history and ethnics' spirits. For example, theGreat Wall in China and the pyramids in Egypt. No one would deny that these typical constructions can serve as the symbols of both nations although neither of them can be put in utilitarian use today. Destructing these building amounts to undermining the nation's history, culture, and even spirits. Besides, such historic relics might serve to help develop the career of tourism. Thus, when it comes to certain symbolic buildings, it is more reasonable for us to have acircumspect attitude towards this issue.

To sum up, the speaker's assertion is justifiable to certain extent. However, he or she unfairly extends the suggestion to any situation. From what we discussed above, even if modern use has precedence over the preservation of history we should keep in mind that many old buildings are the symbols of nations' spirits and they will disappear forever once destructed.
