The speaker asserts that some nonmainstream areas play an important role in society because they satisfy human needs that are not addressed by mainstream science. I agree insofar as such nonmainstream areas cater for individual need in a certain extent. However, in my opinion, going too far in pursuit of those areas may lead to negative effects.

First of all, I agree the statement that the areas satisfy human needs that are not addressed by mainstream science. As we konw, although the science and technology are highly developed in modern society, there are still some fields that cannot be solved by mainstream science. Such situation provides the growing room for nonmainstream areas, which can cater for individual in a certain extent. Such nonmainstream areas will help some people to eliminate the scare of unknown future and become their spiritual bailment. Here is an example that is very persuasive. There is a man who is always defeated despite he keep on trying. After a myriad of failure, he may lose his heart and what he want to do is only to resort to the areas such as fortune-telling, astrology and so on. In order to satisfy the needs of customer, the results of augury are always positive, which help to encourage people to keep on fighting. Thus, these paranormal pursuits entail the negative factors, so to speak.

On the other hand, in temporary life, most people who usually resort to the areas may be the persons who are the underclass of society. For these people, their education level are limited and the mainstream is reachless for them. As a result, those nonmainstream areas become their faith. To some extent, this will prevent them to be criminal and maintain the stability of society.

However, I disapprove the assertion because it seems to recommend that those nonmainstream areas will not bring negative effects. In fact, going too far in pursuit of those areas and psychic and paranormal will engender great harm. Firstly, they do not base on science, but pursue imagination. Consequently, the development of science will be jeoparded and therefore harm the faith of worshiping science, which is the foundation of long-range development of human society. Secondly, If people go too far in those areas, they will become more reliant to the nonmainstream areas.

In conclusion, I concede that the the contribution of nonmainstream areas make to the society cannot be neglected. However, the speaker overstate the importance the importance of the nonmainstream areas. In the final analysis, we should analyze the nonmainstream areas in a dialectic view which thoroughly measures the positive and negative effect.
