Nowadays there is a controversial that how can we concerned with scholars and researchers. Someone suggest that scholars and researchers should be concerned with their contribution to our society. But another suggests that they pursue their individual interests however the interests is too special. In my opinion, i support the later, it is more important that the scholars and researcher pursue their individual interest whether it is unusual or idiosyncratic those interests may seem, not the contribution to the society.
Firstly, researchers should be encouraged to do researches freely, as interests always lead to efficiency. If a researcher does interest the subject, we can judge the can not make great progress in this domain. Without interest the scientist cannot get great progresses during researching. Take Thomas Edison for example, he tried thousands times to build a light bulb, if he did not interest in bulb, there would not be a bulb today. Also, we often see many physical scientist spend their whole life into dealing with the complex physical even if there is no tremendous progress or breakthrough, because the interest of physics they persist in doing the researches day by day. So we can see the interests in important, the motivation of the scientist in their research fields and they pursue is not the result but the interest.
But some one will ask if it is worthwhile to research those useless things? We can not say the useless things today but they may be useful things several years later. For example, when the quantum theory came out in 19th century, people thought it was a useless research in physics, but it make great stride for our researches and studies. There are many subjects correlate with the quantum theory, without the "useless theory", there would not be such great progress as today's. Another example is the computer, when the computer came out in 1946, it was so huge, and the operation speed was slow, most people thought the computer was a useless thing, but the computer changes our life, society, and all of the world today.
Admittedly, scientists and researchers should pursue their individual interests more than their contributions to the large of society. However, they also should obey the moral and ethic. For instance, the clone human cloning technology is condemned because it would cause many ethic problems. Though scientists and researchers can select their subject in their interesting domain, when the subject relate with moral and ethic, it is forbidden.
To sum up, we encourage scientists and researchers pursue their individual whether the interests may unusual or idiosyncratic. We don't judge them by the contribution to our society. Only in this way the scientists and researchers can devote themselves to the researchers, and there will be a bright future for us.
