10th May 2005, J1/J2 1000 Pass Singapore
My Background: Bachelor in EE, China, 20 months as software engineer in China, doing my PhD in Singapore from 2002, medical image analysis, holding a Student Pass, going to submit PhD Thesis in this month.
I am going to do research in a top 20 University in US as a postdoc.
I have been US once in this Feb to attend a conference. That B1 visa was also approved here by the tall and young white guy.
My wife’s background: Bachelor in Material, China, pursuing a Master in Singapore from 2002, thesis is in revision, currently working in a semiconductor company for 4 months and holding a Employment Pass.
She has never been in Us before.
We never got rejected by US.
I applied through a travel agency, so we didn’t wait for too long. I strongly recommend u to do so, ‘coz it is just 30 S$, but eliminate much uncertainty and save a lot of time.
The procedure:
We were there at 8:30. security check, and then waited in the lobby. 4 windows open, a tall and young guy, two Asian ladies, one white lady, who interviewed us.
Co: the consular officer. My wife though she is beautiful, but I thought just so so, a common nice lady. She thinks so ‘coz the lady gave us the visaJ
me: me.
She didn’t ask my wife a single question. My wife was kind of disappointed thoughJ
Me: (a big smile) hi morning.
Co: (also a big smile) morning, can I have ur fingerprints?
Me: sure, (taking our fingerprints)
Co: how long have u been here?
Me: more than three years. I got my B degree in XXX U in China, worked for 20 months in China as S.W. Engr. Then I come here to pursue my Phd. My wife was coming here for a Master. She is working now. My research area is medical image analysis. I got some print out to explain what I am doing, would you have look?
Co: (patiently listening in the meanwhile), no no, don’t need. (I think she has read the detailed description about my research by my future boss, which is quite self explained and concise).
Co: so what r u going to study?
Me: I am not going to study, I am going to do research as a postdoc researcher.
Co: in xx State?
Me: Yes, I got a letter to explain our situation, would u have a look? (I wrote a letter to explain our situation, why we want to go to US, but didn’t mention my future plan. I want to explain if she asks. This part is tricky, I will explain to u guys later.)
Co: (happily) sure, (reading).
Co: (seems everything fine) so u r not a PR?
Me: No, but … (interrupted) ()
Co: r u going to apply? (later, I think that she is going to issue the visas. )
Me: sure, we both got letters from ICA (Immigration Agency of Sg) to invite us apply for PR upon our graduation.
Co: u didn’t finished ur PdH?
Me: not yet.
Co: is US government support ur program?
Me: (confused a little) well, I will be supported by the Department. But the money is from NLM, which is part of NIH, so I think it is supported by the government.
Co: so u r subject to the 2 years home residency rules, bla bla
Me: No problem.
Co: I am gonna approve u visa. Blabla
Me: both of us?
Co: yes.
Me: thank you so much sir, oh no ma’amJ have a nice day!
She didn’t ask me about the plan, which is tricky. ‘coz I am going to show her that I am coming to Sg, otherwise she will reject me and send me back to Beijing, which is troublesome. However, my concern is that if I was rejected even I was saying coming to Sg, I might be caught cheating in China ‘coz I will say that I am coming to China then. Thanks god she didn’t ask anything about this.
Good luck folks!!
