In general, I agree with the assertion that the main task of managers is to make great profit for the company, especially for the shareholders. However, I do not agree that making money is the only responsibility of corporate executives. In my perspective, executives should be concerned about social responsibilities such as citizen’s welfare, social harmony, environment and the like.

It is undoubted that making money was, is and will always be the primary responsibility of corporate executives. Company is quite different from non-profit organization. The initial purpose to build up a company is to earn money, whether for the executives or the investors. It is very common to evaluate a company by its economic strength in modern society. For example, the Fortune forum lists the rich companies every year according to the whole assets of every company. In addition, Money is the base on which corporations surviving in the fierce competition relies. The development and normal operations of company need a great deal of money. For example, Coca Cola, one of the most famous carbon acid drinking manufacturers, spends billions of dollars on advertisement every year. The cost of developing new technologies in Silicon Valley is more than tens of billions of dollars. Moreover, the important standard of outstanding corporate executives is whether they can lead their team maximizing the profits for the company. Jack Welch, chief executive of GE, has made great profits for GE during his period, is regarded as the most successful manager. Therefore, every executive is incumbent to make the corporation profits maximized, ensure the corporation survive and thrive in the fierce competition.

Nevertheless, enterprises can not escape their social responsibilities, which need corporate executives’ attention. Since company is an important component of the society, they are incumbent to take some social responsibilities. For instance, they should support the government’s policies, helping the unemployed people, providing more job opportunities for them and making more charitable causes. It is wise for corporations to redefine their goals. Like Johnson, they define their mission not as trying to make money as possible, but as treating their customs, doctors, patients and other Johnson production or services users, as their first and foremost mission. Besides, compare with various problems, people are more concerned about healthy lives. Companies, which manufacture food and drink, should be assured of the quality of their productions. Media corporations should broadcast comfortable and healthy programs and publications for customers. Moreover, corporations influence even changing their employees’ life. The company’s leaders have duty to create a harmonious atmosphere among their subordinates, help the team keeping passions and motivate them to do the best. At the same time, they should respect the employees and protect their interests, make a good model for others. All of these, as responsibilities, should never be forgotten by the chief executive of a company.

When company’s interests conflict with its duty to the community, the corporate executives should determine that interests concede to the social responsibilities. Social environment is the precondition for existence and development of companies. To some extent, the environment of society determine corporations’ destiny. For example, during the period of Korea suffered from Asian financial crisis in 1997, many corporations in Korea have donated to help the government ride out the storm. In contrast, in Philippines and Indonesia there are a few organizations to do like this, they only depend on the international aid. As a result, Korea recovered faster than the two countries.

As a corporate executive, making as much money as possible is actually an important mission. However, managers can not neglect the company’s social responsibilities. They should support the policies of government, take into account the Local environment and residents’ welfare. Both the money and the good social environment determine the corporations’ future.
