Generally, I agree with the assertion that artist leaves something of permanent value to our society. However, critic also plays an active role to present the great works for society since critic evaluates the great works and discovering their potential values.

Artists, especially the great artists, though their excellent skills and special perspectives, create a great deal of masterpieces which bring eternal aesthetics and values to public. For example, during the Renaissance, there have been a lot of great artists. Their works have been praising by the public till now. In the field of painting, two famous figures, Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo, the former “Mona Lisa” exhibits the limitless imagination and thoughts, through her mysterious smiles; the latter classical sculpture “David” makes countless visitors admire the fighter who fulfill with the vigorous and heroic characteristic, when he confronted the powerful enemy. Another example is in the field of music, Beethoven, who was considered one of the greatest musicians of all times, create the celebrated Symphony No. 5 in C minor, which inspired unfortunate people struggle with the fate. In the field of literature, 'Gone With the Wind', the only published novel of Margaret Mitchell, was vividly portrayed the American Civil War. In the United States, Gone With the Wind has played an important role in reinterpreting the Civil War. The controversy on it continues decades by professional historians. From the ancient time to modern time, the great artist's works stand for a time as milestones, which led to the trend of art and established the aesthetic value as an exemplary role.

Artists own some characters that critics do not have, such as uniqueness and originality, which contribute to lasting value created. Lasting value is such a value that influences the social custom and the political traditional mode. The special perspective and inspiration usually lead culture revolution. Like Leonardo da Vinci’s painting, Mona Lisa, embodies the humanism which was the dominate intellect movement of the Renaissance. However, critics do not create works of art and they only express their own opinions and critiques on certain works. Public are more familiar with the great works than the critique of the works.

Admittedly, it is true that critics find and introduce certain great works of art into our view. Critics evaluate the works and give their own view and comments on the work. As a kind of bridge or media, critic acts as a guider who helps public to acknowledge and understand art’ works well. Maybe they lack of talents to create great works but they have professional perspectives. Without their hard work, some masterpiece would not be discovered, such as the Spanish novel “Don Quixote”. When the saga novel published, it was regarded as no more than a farce. Nevertheless, Russian critics gave it new life. While most critics utilize their professional perspective to distinguish excellent works from various common works for the public. When a new movie or a new novel released, we can easily realize its quality before experience it through the critics’ comments.

Artists create masterpiece for us. Critics evaluate the great works and help us to realize them. Both of them are give our society something of lasting value.
