TOPIC: ISSUE38 - "In the age of television, reading books is not as important as it once was. People can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books."
WORDS: 477          TIME: 45:00          DATE: 2007-1-24
Outline:
1 人们可以通过电视学东西,自然动物,新闻,历史,小说
2 但是,reading books 仍很重要,人们在书上学得比电视上的多
3 书仍然重要,还是最重要的学习方式
Admittedly, people could learn much knowledge and information from television. However, I do not think that reading books is not as important as it once was. As far as I am concerned, people cannot learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books.

There is no denying the fact that in the age of television people do indeed can learn a lot from it. Firstly, people could learn the knowledge of animal and nature from many programs, for example, Animal Planet and National Geographic Channel. Secondly, we can get to know the world and national news from it as well. Some famous programs provide us fast and just news such as CNN and BBC. Thirdly, we also can learn history and stories of famous novels from it. A great number of renowned novels are adapted to TV dramas, for example, the famous Chinese novel--Romance of the Three Kingdoms and Hamlet, one of the best works of Shakespeare. Although these kinds of information and knowledge can be recorded by written record, television depend on its vivid and accurate images attracting a increasing number of people.

However, people cannot learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books. On the one hand, television has its inborn disadvantages to record human ideas and scientific theories. For instance, I would be hard pressed to know how to present Confucianism with television, in this case, I have to say that television is not a good way to express human thoughts. Another telling example involves Fourier and his theory. Fourier Series is a very important and foundational theory of mathematics, physics and computer science. On the other hand, if one would like to understand and digest this kind of idea and theory deeply and completely, he or she must study them slowly and repitedly. Because we cannot control the tempo of television and it tends to create a passive view by instant information, actually, television prevents us from studying them effectively. But when it comes to reading books, we can not only review any part of them feely but schedule time by ourselves.

Moreover, although television provides us a new choice, reading books remains the dominant method of learning. In the field of education, from primary school to middle school, to university and college, book is still the most important material of students. Besides, we cannot omit the power of habit. Human beings have read books for thousands years, we are accustomed to learn from books. Because of this point, reading books will go on playing a big role in the learning of people in the future.

As far as I am concerned, television provides us a new way of learning, and in some aspects, it does indeed have some merits. However, reading books is irreplaceable, the majority knowledge of people learned remains from books. Reading books will play a key role in both today and tomorrow.

与之前练过的issue7有相似的地方。
