TOPIC: ISSUE11 - "All nations should help support the development of a global university designed to engage students in the process of solving the world's most persistent social problems."
WORDS: 683 TIME: AM 01:53:22 DATE: 2007-1-25
I agree on the assertion that all nations will get benefits from establishing a global university, which is designed to engage students in the process of solving the world's persistent social problems. Notwithstanding, all participating nations should reduce risk which have the bad influence on the purpose of the university, during the construction of the school, as possible as they can.
One of the advantages of such a global university is that the students and faculty can bring diverse culture and different background to the problems that they try to solve. The students will know about other approaches and attitude to the same enduring social problems they meet-no matter successful or not, and they can learn from different people from different part of the world and gain various experience. It is naturally to think that the diversity of background and difference of language will impede the communication of the students and faculty. However, in my point of view, this concern is unnecessary, since the pivotal values of different culture and communities have overlaps, such as the respect of life, the desire of freedom and so forth. Moreover, new modern devices facilitate the communication and education with the development of the technology. If we consider that it is more and more convenient to know what happen worldwide by the mass media and internet, the concern will be cast away.
Another advantage of the global university is that it helps solve some persistent worldwide problems. Suppose the issue on the greenhouse effect, which makes the Earth warmer and warmer and threaten some species of animal and human being, for the glacier melt with the increase of temperature. No nation can solve this problem alone because it requires the cooperation of the whole human society. Building such a global university starts a new era that our future generation know the importance and necessity of global cooperation. Thus, many world wide natural problems will be solved or under control with collaboration of different nations more easily than at present, such as the depletion of ozone, the cut of rainforest-which is called "the lung of the Earth", the disappearance of swamp and bog-which are described as the kidney of this planet, and the distinction of precious kind of animal. Furthermore, some social affairs will be also better treated, the hunger, the drugs, the international crimes and the economic depression.
However, to pursue the goal described above, the university should make sure that an agreement should be reached, which, based on common ethics and morality, should not take prejudice towards any ideology or be partial to any specific group of people. In reality, however, this balance is hard to keep, since all universities are restrained by certain political and economic conditions. To illustrate, here are two examples that are very compelling. First, in the 1950s, because of the fear of the USSR, the mania of anti-communism spread almost everywhere in the United States, so not only the communist professor and students were caught, but also lots of professors and students were put into prison or interrogated only because they showed interest in communism or sympathy on the communists. Of cause, nothing about the communism could be mentioned in university openly and neither research on it could get support. This instance demonstrate the political influence on the university and the case that Japanese and U.S.A have a dramatic effect on the decision of the United Nations show how the economic condition play an important role in international relations.
To sum up, considering the world's most persistent social problems become more and more worldwide, it is necessary to found a global university which is planned to increase the mutual study, communication and cooperation of young people. Since all nations participating this program benefit from it, they should make their best to overcome the procedural and political obstacles that might stand on the way to success. Provided every nation is careful not to put partial effect on the university, and as long as the administrators of the university keep open-minded to various inquiry and research, the university will achieve our expectation sooner or later.
