I do not agree with the statement's assertion. With the development of TV, more and more information can be obtained by watching TV in an impressive and vivid way. However, reading books is still an indispensable role in learning. Watching TV cannot replace reading books as a way of learning.
It is true that the emergence of television does have enormous impact on learning. TV plays a unique role in accurate and vivid description of events and scenes. For instance, we can enjoy the exciting time of NBA by live programs of TV. The more important, TV can provide various and extensive knowledge for the audience. When watching the National Geographic Channel or the Discovery Channel, we are likely to know more detailed introduction of the nature, from the primitive African plain to mysterious tropical rainforest of Amazon. We are able to enjoy various beautiful sceneries and the custom of different nations at home through TV program. In addition, a lot of news program can provide us fast and real-time news about the world. Like the CNN did. In short, television has really provided useful information for our learning.
However, reading books are still important, people cannot learn as much by watching TV as they can by reading books. On the one hand, reading books have irreplaceable advantages that television cannot provide. Most books are portable, people can take them anywhere. For example, when waiting in subway station, you can read books taken by yourselves. Books also have other merits, such as people can easily review or preview the knowledge in book, and people are able to read other material, like a dictionary, while reading books. On the other hand, television has disadvantage in describing ideas and emotion of human. Television also has difficulties in communicating scientific theories, which people can only study from books. For example, it is very hard for students to study the deriving process of a mathematical formula by some instant TV program. It needs a slow understanding and deep thinking process. In addition, TV has some inherent defects. Television working depends on electricity and the content provided by TV is limited by the broadcast signals. People are just passive acceptance and have no interaction with TV.
With the rapid development of modern technology, television can be a useful supply of reading books in learning. To some extent, TV is able to replace some assignments of teacher, yet it cannot replace reading books as the dominant method of learning. The most obvious example is that all schools, no matter in the United States or not, no matter in primary school or university, are still use books not television as their main teaching tool.
Both TV and reading books have advantages in study. It appears at this stage that with the aid of TV, reading books is an appreciable way for people to learn. |
