TOPIC: ISSUE4 - "No field of study can advance significantly unless outsiders bring their knowledge and experience to that field of study."
WORDS: 384       DATE: 2007-1-26

The speaker asserts that no area of study is able to advance significantly unless outsiders bring their knowledge to that field of study. I agree the assertion in the whole. However, in my view, before importing the knowledge of outside field, people should thoroughly master the existing foundational knowledge.

First of all, I concede that a discipline can advance significantly only with the help of outsiders. In temporary society, more and more fields are interconnected and they experience mutual growth. Thus, significant scientific breakthrough often emerges in the interaction among different disciplines. Here is an instance that is persuasive. In Materials Science, the discovery of new material depends on the research of material's inner structure. By means of electron microscope, the research of inner structure comes to reality. However, materials scientists cannot invent electron microscope themselves, and the invention of it should mainly attribute to the physics and mechanics. After obtaining the parameters of the material's inner structure, researcher should analyze the data, this time they should resort to chemistry and computer. Therefore, the research of materials involves in not only materials science itself, but also other interconnected disciplines such physics, mechanics, chemistry and computer science, and so on.

Moreover, the combination of different fields would help people to analyze problems effectively, so as to understand the issues deeply and thoroughly. This is true especially when it comes to psychology. With the help of statistics, people are able to analyze psychological problems through statistical methods, finding the similarities and differences between different individual, so to speak, the combination of psychology and statistics makes the research of psychological problems clearly and effectively.

However, the precondition of making great progress in any fields resides in the thoroughly mastering the existing foundational knowledge. Without this, it will possibly comes to the result that the knowledge in one's field cannot syncretize well with the outside fields. Accordingly, people should not overemphasize the importance of importing outside knowledge, people should also pay attention the foundational knowledge of their fields.

In sum, no fields of scientific exploration develops in a vacuum, in that, sciences are inevitably related. Therefore, no field of study can advance significantly without the help of outside fields. In the mean time, we should not neglect the fact that mastering the existing foundational knowledge is the precondition.

The speaker asserts that no area of study is able to advance significantly unless outsiders bring their knowledge to that field of study. I agree the assertion in the whole. However, in my view, before importing the knowledge of outside field, people should thoroughly master the existing foundational knowledge.

First of all, I concede that a discipline can advance significantly only[既然你都是勉强承认的,还要这个only岂不是自相矛盾] with the help of outsiders. However, materials scientists cannot invent electron microscope themselves, and the invention of it should mainly attribute to the physics and mechanics.[这个例子很好!] After obtaining the parameters of the material's inner structure, researcher should analyze the data, this time they should resort to chemistry and computer.

这个例子也很好啊,你很擅长举例子。

In sum, no fields of scientific exploration develops[would develop]in a vacuum[这句和后面一句有些重复,若是这句放到开头,会令人非常眼前一亮的!], in that, sciences are inevitably related. Therefore, no field of study can advance significantly without the help of outside fields. In the mean time, we should not neglect the fact that mastering the existing foundational knowledge is the precondition.
