Nowadays, Scandals have occurred in various fields such as politics, academia and so on. Some of them are useful for the public to supervise and discover various hidden problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could.

Scandals can reveal some hidden deep social and political problems through their unique ways that no speaker or reformer ever could. Perhaps the paradigmatic modern example is the oil-for-food program, which started from 1996 allow Iraq to sell limited amounts of oil for urgent need of food and medicine. However, many officials who were in charge of the project and some other high-ranking officials of United Nations accepted Saddam's bribes. More than two thousand companies involved in this scandal. This scandal is not only an event that affects Annan and UN, to broader extent, it also initiates serious thinking and debate about what is humanitarian and the high-level corruption among government officials. Obviously, no speaker or reformer would have called public attention to the UN's misconducts. Therefore, scandals are useful sometimes in political area.

In academia, scandals also expose some problems in their own ways and help to purify the academia. In our impression, academia is always an unpolluted sky. However, along with happening of academic scandals in recent years, we clearly understand that these problems really existed. For example, in the end of 2002, a panel of Bell Laboratories found that one of their excellent scientists--Jan Hendrik Schon, who have released about one hundred papers, some of which were published in "Nature" and "Science" magazine, has certain act of forgery in his experiments. Finally, the investigation made conclusion that the majority of Schon's experiment results are forged or altered. The exposing of Schon incident has shocked the world of physics. It is one of the largest scientific frauds in modern science. Those have been affected not only Schon himself, but also the famous institute, Bell Laboratories and Max Planck Institute in Germany and "Science" and "Nature" magazines. This sandal brought about a far-reaching impact and American announced a set of statements on professional conduct. Besides, the whole academia increased the level of scrutiny into academic papers. Without scandals like this, people might never emphasize on hidden problems in academia. That is to say, scandals can also useful in academic area.

However, sometimes scandals can serve chiefly to distract us from more important and pressing matters. Scandals of famous political leaders or stars' private life are just a waste of revenue and resource in most time. For instance, almost every TV and radio have emphasized on the sex scandal of President Clinton when this scandal exposed. Yet Clinton's private life should not be focus of public attention. His ability should be concern more as a president by the people. Throughout a year the scandal served chiefly to distract us from our most pressing national and global problems, such as the Kosovo crisis, our social-security crisis and health-care reform and the like.

Although scandals sometimes distract our attention, they can be useful whether in politics, academia, or other areas because they focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could so that we can solve these problems to some extend.
