The statement asserts that whether individuals are great or not should be decided only by posterity. In my perspective, the public cognition developed gradually. If the achievement of individuals could be realized by their contemporary knowledge and social value, their greatness would be decided by their contemporaries. If not, their greatness would be decided by those who live after them.

On the one hand, because people's cognition is limited by social conditions and the level of knowledge, the greatness of some individuals cannot be accepted by the contemporaries. The life of this kind of people is often a tragedy. One of the famous tragic figures is Van Gogh, a painter who was a great genius as an artist. Van Gogh expressed his emotion through his paintings. However, during his lifetime Van Gogh's works failed to find out an appreciative audience. His art become popular after his death, especially in the late 20th century, his paintings sold for record prices at auctions around the world and the exhibitions of his paintings have proved to be extremely welcome. Along with the development of society and the public knowledge, the greatness of individuals would be approved finally.

On the other hand, as a result of the limitation of science and technology, people are hardly to understand and accept the discovery, innovation, creative ideas and so forth. It is very common in our lives, especially in the field of science. There have been many creative ideas and inventions approved after their inventor death. For example, famous astronomer Copernicus discovered that the earth and other planets revolve about sun. This theory developed in the early 1500s but not published until Copernicus dead because Sun-Centered theory disputed the old theory, and he feared persecution from the religious communities. However, after suffering initial distrust and rejection, the Sun-Centered theory ranked as the most accepted concept of the universe of the late 17th century. Sometimes individuals whose thinking contradicted to the contemporary main value would be persecuted by the authority. Like Bruno, who persisted the Sun-Centered theory, was burned by the Catholic religious court.

Admittedly, the greatness of individuals has been approved by contemporaries. Perhaps theparadigmatic/typical example is the Mother Teresa, who was the founder of Missionaries of Charity. Mother Teresa helps those who are starving and sick. She also helps poor children. For her humanitarian work she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. Mother Teresa passed away in 1997. People around the world mourned her death. The Peace Prize and people's respect is the best approval/sanction for Mother Teresa's greatness. Another similar example is Martin Luther King, who devotes himself to the movement of civil right. King was also awarded the Noble Peace Prize. In field of science, many excellent scientists are approved by contemporary, like Edison and Newton. Therefore, if the achievements of individuals can be realized by contemporary social value and scientific level, their greatness would be decided by the contemporaries.

There are many individuals whose achievements were broadly recognized as even during their life time. However, some great achievements need a long time examination and understanding.
