While the speaker asserts that we must choose between modernization and tradition because they are incompatible, I cannot completely agree with the speaker. In my view, in some cases, modernization and tradition actually contradict each other. However, in many places, modernization and tradition do mutually embrace.

Admittedly, sometimes, “modernization” rejects, even substitutes for “tradition”. In this case, we must choose between them. This case happened in value, belief, political, economical fields. Although some certain traditional values, beliefs such as honesty, probity, kindness and so on ,are handed down from generation to generation, and we should hold on forever, Some value conceptions indeed are not able to accommodate the needs of modern society and should be discard. For example, in ancient society, people generally believe that it is a merit for women to have no knowledge. But today, this conception was challenged by a majority of women who take on important position in politics, business, science. Similarly, in political fields, tradition national government’s model of “centranization of state power “ which was used in China for thousands of years ,now was replaced by “ democratization “ in which every citizen has power to express his/her idea about the regulation of the country. In economy, traditional “plan economy’” model also disappeared with the introduction of market economy model, because the latter was proved to be more benefic to the prosperous of modern economy.

However, in some place, modernization and tradition are coexist and the former is only an supplement rather than substitution of tradition. This is true when it comes to medical,  informational technology. In Modern medicine , doctors can diagnose and treat disease depending on growing number of accessorial tools such as ultrasonic, gamma ray, computer supervisal and so on, However, traditional chinese medicine still play an important role in medicine ,it can cure many disease that the modern medicine can not do. For example, while modernization medicine pose only little effect to spondylitis ,traditional Chinese medicine can heal this disease. Therefore, traditional and modernization are the same important in medicine. Likely, in informational technology ,One easily found that E-mail, a new quickly communication way , is also only the supplement of the traditional communication ways such as letter. In fact ,some people prefer to catch with friends through writing paper letter because they believe that the manuscript   words express a special feeling that the typed word cannot do.  

In addition, in some cases, modernization and tradition are interaction. The former guide the latter, the latter, in turn , boost the former. Art is an aptly example, with the introduction of computer and electronic tools, pictures can de designed by software, music can be modified and performed by computer .But they still conform to traditional aesthetic standards. Modern composers still study Beethoven’s works to improve themselves.  On the other hands, modern technology made the traditional aesthetic principles being represented completely.  Through applying computer programs, artists are easier to arrange the colors used in picture thereby making the arrangement of colors harmonious. In short, modernization and tradition have close relationship in artistic fields.

In sum, according to the analysis above, we can safely conclude that although modernization and tradition are mutually exclusive in certain cases, modernization embrace tradition in many fields, especially in medicine, technology, arts.
