这篇太烦了,整得我心情不好
TOPIC: ISSUE4 - "No field of study can advance significantly unless outsiders bring their knowledge and experience to that field of study."
WORDS: 469 TIME: 0:45:00 DATE: 2007-1-21
Chemistry will still be ancient alchemy without the introduction of mathematical and physical methods. The introduction of math, physics and recently computer technology, help the ancient augury grew into astronomy. Thus, I strongly agree with the contention that no field of study can advance significantly without the knowledge and experience of outsiders, primarily because the origin of most disciplines is the same and our society calls for people who major in cross-subjects.
To begin with, the origin of most modern fields of study is philosophy, which gives people general principles that can apply to almost every aspect of the society. For instance, both natural science such as physics, astrology, and humanities such as psychology are derived from philosophy. Moreover, even music and architecture are related with each other. One of my friends, now a manger of a famous architecture company, once said that architecture is concretionary music. In other words, there exists a general basis among most principles. Thus, the same origin makes it possible for disciplines to bring knowledge and experience to advance each other.
In addition, many modern disciplines developed based on some other subjects, and therefore no discipline can advance significantly without these basic subjects. The relationship between psychology and statistics is an apt illustration for this point. Psychology is a subject that analyzes the human's inside world in a quantitive method -- statistics. Without the knowledge of statistics, the research result of psychology would be certainly unconvincing. Another proper discipline to illustrate this point is archeology. To identify the actual age of a relic, an archeologist should equip with knowledge of biology, chemistry, physics, geology, and history. Apparently, many subjects' development, even their survivals rely on some other subjects.
Furthermore, there is a tendency that our society calls for more and more cross-disciplines. Along with the development of technology, our society faces with more complex issues, which can only be solved by the cooperation of experts from various disciplines. However, due to the different educational background, it is often difficult for these experts to communicate effectively. Therefore, our society needs generalists who major in cross-subjects to act as a communicated bridge between these experts. For example, with the wide usage of computer, educational experts realize that the courseware based on computer can improve the effectiveness of learning. Nevertheless, for lacking of necessary instructional method, courseware is often poorly designed, which actually distracts students from the main objectives of the course to the vivid image on the screen, and eventually brings about negative effect for instruction. As for teachers, for their scant computer knowledge, they often cannot express exactly what they want for their instruction to courseware developers with terms related to computer. Thereby, people who understand both instructional method and computer are needed, which also causes the birth of my major -- educational technology.
In sum, due to the reasons mentioned above, we can safely draw the conclusion that the knowledge and experience of outsiders is the basis of most fields of study, and therefore lacking the outsiders most fields cannot advance significantly. |
