I concede that non-mainstream areas of inquiry can meet certain human needs. However, in my view of point, the potential harm non-mainstream areas of inquiry inflict on individuals and on society are far more than their psychological benefits.

Non-mainstream areas of inquiry as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits can satisfy certain human needs which mainstream science inherently cannot. One of such need is that we all have such experience that sometimes we have to make our own choices and decisions in life and therefore carry some responsibility for their consequences. Faced with various choices, we experience uncertainty, fear and confusion, and we feel regret and guilt when it proved that our choices and decisions to be false ones. In order to prevent these bad feeling people try to shift the burden of making difficult decisions and choices to astrology or a stack of tarot cards.

Another need has to do with that we are afraid of death, whether it happens to ourselves or the people we loved. This awareness brings certain measure of pain that most people try to relieve by searching for some evidence of another side of the world as heaven or searching for evidence of afterlife. For example, when someone lost his lover, he always solaces himself that she has been watching him in some places of the world but anyone cannot find her. This is the best example that people release themselves by non-mainstream areas of inquiry.

Although non-mainstream areas of inquiry content certain human needs, we cannot ignore their great harm to individuals and society. On the personal level, if people indulge in astrology and fortune-telling, they will loss their interests and ambitions to explore the truth. In some extreme cases, indulging in non-mainstream areas of inquiry can lead to irrational and unreasonable actions such as anti-social behaviors and even hatred. For example, in Tokyo, Japan, some members of Aum Shinrikyoreleasedpoison nerve gas in Tokyo subway stations, killing and injuring 5000 more people in 1995.

On the social level, indulging in non-mainstream areas of inquiry can cause instability of society and harm the innocent people. Such as holy war, the famous holy war is Crusade, which continued about two hundred years and killed hundreds of thousands innocent people. The paradigmatic modern example is the cult mass suicide in the United States, the largest mass suicide happen in 1997 about 40 members of Heaven' Gate cult kill themselves together because they believe that through suicide their soles would leave body containers and travel to a higher realm.

In sum, I concede that non-mainstream areas of inquiry as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits are useful when they afford many human psychological solaces. However, non-mainstream areas of inquiry can block people finding and pursuing truth. We cannot ignore their great harm to individuals and society.
