题目:ARGUMENT51 - The following appeared in a medical newsletter.

"Doctors have long suspected that secondary infections may keep some patients from healing quickly after severe muscle strain. This hypothesis has now been proved by preliminary results of a study of two groups of patients. The first group of patients, all being treated for muscle injuries by Dr. Newland, a doctor who specializes in sports medicine, took antibiotics regularly throughout their treatment. Their recuperation time was, on average, 40 percent quicker than typically expected. Patients in the second group, all being treated by Dr. Alton, a general physician, were given sugar pills, although the patients believed they were taking antibiotics. Their average recuperation time was not significantly reduced. Therefore, all patients who are diagnosed with muscle strain would be well advised to take antibiotics as part of their treatment."

In this argument, the author claims that all patients who are diagnosed with muscle strain would be well advised to take antibiotics as part of their treatment. To support the conclusion, the author cites a result of a study: the recuperatiom time of the first group of patients which were treated by a sports medicine doctor and took antibiotics was reduced; the recuperatiom time of the second group of patients which were treated by a general doctor and took sugar pills was not reduced. However, this argumet suffers from several critical flaws and is therefore unconvincing.

Firstly, the conclusion is based on a result of study which lacks credibility. In order to evaluate the study we should know how the study was conducted, and the size of samle is sufficent and could be representative all the patients who suffer from muscle strain as a whole. It is possible that the size of sample is too little to reflect the factor.

Secondly, the process of the study is unreliable for three reasons. First, the author provide no evidence that the extent of injuries of the two different groups are the same. If the first group's injuries are not as serious as the second group, then we can not compare them effectively. Second, the author fails to take into account other factors that might influence the treatment. As mentioned above, these two different groups were treated by different doctors. Thus, it is highly possible that Dr. Newland used some effective measures that could help to patients' recuperation, because he is a a doctor who specializes in sports medicine. Third, the author unfairly assumes that sugar pills have no negative effects to the patients in the second group, but perhaps sugar pills are bad for the patients' recuperation, and this point leads to the result that patients in second groups endure longer recuperation time. In short, without valid evidence for the problems above-mentioned, the author could not draw any firm conclusion.

Thirdly, the author commits a fallacy of hasty generalization. Even antibiotics are good for the treatment of muscle strain, it is possible that antibiotics are not sutiable for "all" patients. In addition, the author overlooks that the antibiotics would result in some side effects that is harmful to patients' health.

In sum, the author should have to rule out other possibilities that might weaken the argument.

In this argument, the author claims that all patients who are diagnosed with muscle strain would be well advised to take antibiotics as part of their treatment. To support the conclusion, the author cites a result of a study: the recuperatiom [recuperation] time of the first group of patients which were treated by a sports medicine doctor and took antibiotics was reduced; the recuperatiom time of the second group of patients which were treated by a general doctor and took sugar pills was not reduced. However, this argumet
suffers from several critical flaws and is therefore unconvincing.

Firstly, the conclusion is based on a result of study which lacks credibility. In order to evaluate the study we should know how the study was conducted, and the size of samle[sample] is sufficient and the subjects could be representative of all the patients who suffer from muscle strain as a whole. It is possible that the size of sample is too little to reflect the factor.

Secondly, the process of the study is unreliable for three reasons. First, the author provides no evidence that the extent of injuries of the two different groups are the same. [试一试The physical states of the first group must be similar with the situation of the second one.] If the first group's injuries are not as serious as the second group, then we can not compare them effectively. Second, the author fails to take into account other factors that might influence the treatment. As mentioned above, these two different groups were treated by different doctors. Thus, it is highly possible that Dr. Newland used some effective measures that could help to patients' recuperation, because he is a doctor who specializes in sports medicine. Thirdly, the author commits a fallacy of hasty generalization. Even antibiotics are good for the treatment of muscle strain, it is possible that antibiotics are not sutiable
for "all" patients. In addition, the author overlooks that the antibiotics would result in some side effects that is harmful to patients' health.

In sum, the author should have to rule out other possibilities that might weaken the argument

模版的痕迹很小,难得!逻辑错误很正确,限时完成得挺不错了,body12可以在处理一下,感觉是一个问题,reliability of the survey’s result is open to doubt. 可以把body2分开写
