TOPIC: ISSUE5 - "A nation should require all its students to study the same national curriculum until they enter college rather than allow schools in different parts of the nation to determine which academic courses to offer."
限时失败
1 教育统一的社会价值
2 ~~~~~~学术价值
3 大学阶段的多样性
4 一定的灵活性,是必要的。
For educators, to choose appropriate strategy for people's education is instrumental to the success of one's academic life and the prosperity of the society as a whole. I generally agree with the speaker to set mandatory standard education requirement for the whole nation during the study period before college. Nevertheless, we should allow some flexible change or amendment for this strategy to make it more practicable.
Mandatory standard for the courses of students before college will secure the basic development of one person during a period in which people experience high level of change in character, pattern of thinking, ethical standard, and mental frameworks. Through national prescription on the course list of a student's education before college, the difference of the local environment will not do harm to the educational standard of the nation. We can classify the local affluence to students' education as social and academic ones. As local government will infuse the local thinking into the course of younger students in their middle school elementary school, these thoughts sometimes go against the common consensus of the whole nation. One telling example involves the governmental interference with students' political course. Central government will frequently add the idea of sovereignty of the concept of nation; the integrity of one nation will always be described as inviolable. Through this indoctrination, young students will naturally accept this sense of nation during their growth and have an indelible memory on it.
As to academic influence of nationally prescribed courses, we can turn our focus to the regional difference of students’ capacity to accept academic ideas. As coastal areas of a nation will be more open to global ideas, hinterlands, however, will feel difficulty to accept these ideas and add them into their students’ courses. To solve this problem a nationwide edition of courses featuring global ideas will eliminate this negative effect caused by regional differences. For example, international corporation will set regional branch around the world. However, for the sake of economical reason, many company will choose coastal area rather than inland area to realize this goal. In order to help students understand this progress regardless of their locality, national courses will be helpful.
College education, however, is inclined to provide students specific skills that will enable them to survive in the society. Considering the distinction of the social environment in different region of one nation, college education should accordingly provide flexible and suitable education to students who will serve locally after their graduation. For regions which is abundant with minerals, local college will choose to set more courses related to this subject so as to help students feel easier to join the local job market.
Although there are benefits of a mandatory prescription on one nation's educational strategy, it will bring negative effects to overall quality of education when this prescription is administrated allowing no flexible variation. In order to help preserve national diversity of culture, some local government may feel necessary to require schools to teach regional peculiarity to students, because this process make students feel a strong identity of their hometown, and thus infuse an attachment to hometown. To add regional courses to the nationwide course for students, as a result, is the best way to realize both the generalization need of the nation and the local need of attachment of students to their hometown.
To sum up, nationwide standard for education is an unavoidable policy to guarantee the integrity of students' personal development academically and socially. However, as our society has entered a new age admiring diversity and originality, too stiffen prescription will shackle students' formation of their peculiarity, which will contribute significantly to their devotion to the society after their study. For this reason, to properly manage this requirement for students' courses is critical to the success of the intention of this strategy.
