Practicality, which directly bring prosperity and convenience to our society, is always over emphasized wrongly by some people who overlook the base on which it is created. So, we should underline its foundation -basic theories- which seems have no direct usage as well as practicality.

Admittedly, the practical technology, based on practicality plays an important role in the progress of society. Look at world around, you may find that most of our common productions are practical things with a special purpose. Let's take a water bottle for example. A water bottle, which has been used to catch water with somebody to drink when he is thirsty, is now changing a lot not only from its appearance but more fundamentally from its function. Now in front of me, there is a vacuum water bottle made with iron, which can keep water's temperature for a quite long time. There are also many other different kinds of bottles with different purpose, such as space ones, metal ones, glass ones, and bottles designed specially for babies. It is these differences that could cater many different customers and usages. Therefore, these ideas and practical actions based on practicality make us live in a more comfortable society.

However, when we mentioned basic theories or knowledge, from which practical technology developed, we should acknowledge that: only when basic theories and knowledge develop to a considerable level can practical technology be born. Firstly, people always can not expect some theory's practical usage until some really machine or mechanical equipment is produced based on it. When Faraday discovered the electromagnetic induction, some people asked him: what is his theory's usage? He answered them with a similarly question: what does a infant can be used? Later, it was proofed that his theory is extremely important to the modern electricity power and to modern industry. Secondly, some fundamental science areas have not obviously practical functions but can act as a useful implement for other practical technology's progress. Mathematic is a case in point. It is hard to say how much practical benefits it brings to our society, but there is no doubt that without it our society would always be a primeval condition. At last, in some areas, practicality may be not proper: such as, art, education, etc.

Over emphasize practicality may lead to some disadvantage impact to our society, living quality or even our human's personality. Our society may log in only by holding the practical technology invented previously, not by new theories to produce newer, more efficient technologies. In the same time, our living quality may no longer promote or even fall down because of problems generated by modern technologies. Last but not least, human being may become a brutal animal who only cares practical profits and gradually lost his merits such as merchant, probe, honesty and love.

In sum, we should emphasize practicality in a moderate way while we focus on fundamental theories and the developing of human’s personality. Only in this way, can our society be a harmony, efficient and prosperity one.
