Is all the value existing in the world-being is created by artists, and a critic does absolute nothing?I agree insofar on the claim that artists play a crucial role in the produce and transfer of social value. Yet strictly followed, the speaker's recommendation may suffer some flaws as it overlooks critics' contribution on world value in other angles as one may easily ignore.
Admittedly, artists are the original creators of art, which one may recognize it as social lasting value. One could assume that once an art work is finished, it could be immortal unless it is damaged physically. In the history, many of the world greatest art opuses protect well in museums while critics left nothing materials but commentson the art opuses which usually be washed away by the time river. For example, Monet, the first representative of Impression Art, was heavily criticized by society as his work <Sunrise Impression> did not include reality but only a glance on the landscape, a style which did not accept by critics in that year.Actually, critics now appraise Monet's work and admit his work worthwhile greatvalue, however, no one clearly knows the names of the critics now and ever. Thus, artist's work and spirit can be saved from the erosion of history, while when talk about the critics, one may only cite his sayings at most.
No doubt that art itself is immortal, unfortunately, without the impulse of critics, even the greatest artist may not have so much inspiration. For instance, Mozart is famous for his genius on classical music and composing thousands of music pieces during his only 38 living time, nevertheless, it is the criticism throughout his live that inspire him and makes his works more popular. The first critic is just his father who pointed out Mozart's music is luxury on surface, but extremely difficult for operating, which he said only Mozart himself can understand his music and reflect it on the piano. His father's criticism changes Mozart's way of composing and contributes to his success in the musicrealm. Finally, although critics’ names may not be remembered by human, their advice or simply “attacks” would help artists understand their works better.
Furthermore, besides critics offer useful suggestions to artists to make progress, they also produce lasting value as they create method for human to appreciate art. For supporting examples one can look no further than Ballet. One can imagine a person who knows nothing about ballet would first touch the art from other's discussions. Thus the most direct method is to listen to critics' comments which clearly express personal ideas of what is an excellent ballet opera, howwould the most talented ballet actor do on the stage, and information about eminenttopics of ballet. Critics not only offer their view about art, but they also supply a method of knowing the art in depth, not barely the external phenomenon. Understandably, critic’s method to appreciate art could be used by people who enjoy art andlast long in the history.
In sum, without artists there would no concept of art and it is their works that can be passed from generations. Without the advices from critics, artist can only copy their previous works and make no advancement. Additionally, criticism gives examples of how the art is like and teaches us to enjoy it. In the finalconclusion, both artists and critics give solution to the creativity of social value and the difference only lies in their functions in two aspects.
