ISSUE130 - "How children are socialized today determines the destiny of society. Unfortunately, we have not yet learned how to raise children who can help bring about a better society."
Socialization, process by which people especially children, learn acceptable and unacceptable behaviors for a given environment. The speaker asserts that society's destiny hinges on how children are socialized and we have not yet know how to raise children who can help bring about a better society. In my opinion, the speaker overstates function of children socialization and we already fine the way how to raise children.
Admittedly, children socialization is definitely paramount since, as we all know, children are the future of society. Human infants are born without any culture and they must be transformed by parents, teachers and others into cultural and socially adept animals. The general process of acquiring culture is referred to as socialization. During socialization children learn how to negotiate, bargain, cajole, compromise, and redirect conflict--such as through humor--in ways that reflect developing psychological understanding and social maturity, and finally build self-esteem and social skills all of which are significant to better society. All in all, socialization is an important method to get children into society.
However, socialization is only one factor influencing the extent to which an individual will ultimately contribute to a better society. And in my opinion it is not the most important one. During the 1950's, Margaret Mead led an extensive field study of early socialization practices in six different societies. And Mead concluded that the socialization practices were generally similar among people of the same society. However, person's contributions to the society are different. Why? There must be some other factors influences person's contributions. To witness this, one need look no further than Martin Luther King. On the 1960s and 1970s of America, most American even the American government hold the belief that white man have advanced natural gift and most black man live a poor lives because of their nature. However King struggle for the black man's equal rights. And we can see that King's contributions to the Civil Right Movement was primarily the result of his strong belief that black man should have equal right as white person which is different from the social belief at that time.
Finally, we as a society have already find the right way to raise children who will better society. In contrast to the social condition of the past, our society's situations nowadays are better. Satisfactory system of medical treatment has been found to make sure that everyone can get the best medical treatment needed. Our society has also established unemployment protection systems ensuring person without job can subsist. People with different cultural and national traditions are more likely to solve conflicts in peace ways other than violent or blood way like the two World-Wars In short, our society nowadays is better than the past and it's the result of right way to raise children.
In sum, when it comes to whether a child grows up to contribute to a better society, the key determinant is not socialization, but rather some other factors. And our society nowadays has changed a lot and the right way to raise children has already been found. |
