Argument 147

  In this editorial,the arguer concludes that the sales of Whirlwind video games are likey to increase dramatically in the next few months. To support the conclusion, the author provides a survey concerning the attractive features of the successful games.Besides the author then point out that Whirlwind has just introduced several games with advertising campaign directed at people 10 to 25 years old.In my view, this argument is fundamentally deficient and hence uncompelling as it stands.

  First of all, the author's conclusion mainly relies on the survey of video-game players,whose statistical reliability is unconvincing. Though players prefer games that provide lifelike graphics,it does not mean that they will purchase the games.In fact,it is commonsense that there are many other features that atract the players mostly,such as the theme and type of the game.It is possible that the survey was conducted in a particular district where its respondents like to play a same game with a lifelike graphics.Besides, the respondents are wealthy and they can afford the most up-to-date computers.Compared with the new video-game, the conventional video games have a great advantage of the low requirements on the computer hardware.In addition, there is not a uniform standard whether a game has lifelike graphics or not. In order to make the game more lifelike, the game company will spend more money on the design of the game. Therefore, Due to the increase of the price of the game, players may not purchase such an expensive game.

  Secondly, no evidence shows that 10 to 25 years old players are mainly those who care about the life graphics.There may be something of a difference between the people conducting the survey and those whom an extensive advertising campaign is directing at. Maybe the advertisement neglects other potential customers-the adults who are willing to purchase these new games.As we konw, 10 to 25 years old players are mostly students. Therefore, Even if 10 to 25 years old player are mainly the potential buyer, they could not possibly afford that new game and up-to-date computers.

  Finally, new games produced by Whirlwind are not necessarily popular even if the sales of the lifelike video games are increasing. The editorial mentions that the sales of Whirlwind video games have declined over the past two years, the reason of which is not clearly identified.Perhaps the company confronts with the difficulities in the management and market spread. In the field of video games, the fierce competition is inevitable. Every company will spare no effort to produce the new and attractive games to satisfy the demand of their potential players. Probably , other companies also realise the importance of the lifelike graphics.Consequently, not only the Whirlwind game has the advantage of lifelike graphics.Furthermore, even if the advertising campaign may be effective, there is no the guarantee that the sales of Whirlwind video games would be likely to increase dramatically in the next few months.Considering some disadvantage factors, it may take a long time to reverse the two-year sale decline.      
   
  In conclusion, the editorial is too simplicial about the effect of the introduction of the new products. To objectively and penetratingly evaluate the current situation, the reliability of the survey, the prices of the video games and hardware, and potential competition should be scrutinized.
