The speaker contends that society does not attach enough importance to reasoning and other cognitive skills. I would agree that society’s overall emphasis on the intellect is far from sufficient and that intellectual cultivation should be extended, yet I also realize that there exist a multitude of social problems that cannot be solved by intellect solely. Only by using cognitive skills together with the non-intellectual qualities can we reach satisfactory solutions. (开头很明确)
One common area where intellect is not sufficiently valued is the workplace. Ideally, given two persons with equivalent cognitive skills, both of them should be praised, promoted and paid equally. However, if one person appeals to be more eloquent or gregarious than the other does, he or she is more likely to get ahead. Likewise, women who frequently perform as well as or even better than men do in cognitive fields of academics or work, continue to face the so-called “glass ceiling”(这个什么意思啊,教教我), receiving limited salary and room for career growth(promotion好不) that do not match their capability.
Education is another area where intellect is not fully recognized. In schools, the intellect of a student is usually correlated with his or her exam grades or ranks rather than anything else. Though educators are professional in instilling certain specific knowledge and techniques in the students, they fail to foster students’ cognitive skills such as logical thinking, evaluation and interpretation, which play a crucial role either in their comprehension of issues or in application of their general knowledge. Due to the absence of intellect(intellectual) cultivation, students are prone to blind beliefs in authorities, lacking suspicious spirit and fresh(independent会不会更好些呀) opinions of their own. This probably explains why nowadays there emerge fewer great scientists like Albert Einstein and Newton, who made significant contribution to the world using their intellectual skills. (这里的例子和论述有点极端哦,只要说说高分低能,或者片面追求分数什么的就可以了吧,呵呵)
However, intellect alone cannot fulfill people’s quality, nor can it necessarily resolve all the problems occurred in society. Non-intellectual factors also contribute to personal development and the solutions to a variety of tasks. Qualities like persistence and patience are as important as, if no more than, cognitive skills in overcoming difficulties and competing in the modern society. While cognitive skills have marginally improved agriculture in the last century, it is the basic knowledge in farming and labor management that serve to provide food for the hungry. (没有例子哦)
In brief, without developed cognitive skills, people fall behind, consequently leading a slower progress of the whole society. Unfortunately, society seems to lay insufficient emphasis on cultivating these skills. It is imperative, therefore, for society to take the intellect more seriously, in the meanwhile, not ignore to pay attention to the non-intellectual qualities.
虽然还是有很多我要学习的地方,但是实话说,TRRO这篇没有上篇出色哦, 有时间大家一起讨论下吧,呵呵.
