TOPIC: ARGUMENT124 - The following is a memo from the business manager of National Daily News.

"To expand the home delivery service of our national newspaper, we should concentrate on the state of Urba rather than on the state of Sylva. First, the population of Sylva is more widely dispersed, which would require us to spend more money to deliver our papers in that area, resulting in less profit per customer. Second, a long-term study of television viewing habits suggests that Sylvans prefer local to national news, since they spend twice as much time viewing local news programs as they do viewing national programs. Finally, because events in Urba receive more coverage in our newspaper than do events in Sylva, we can expect Urbans to be more interested in reading our newspaper."

The argument seems to be reasonable at first glance, but careful examination will find that several places are logically flawed. First, the arguer concludes that dispersed widely population will result in less profits, but fails to consider the amount of consumers there. Second, the arguer commits a fallacy to equal watching TV habits to reading newspaper habits. In addition, there is a unreasonable assumption that relies on the ratio of coverage on newspaper of certain place to determine that place's (purchasing) consuming condition. I will discuss those cases one by one.
255=93+80+82
To begin with, there is an unconvincing speculation that the more widely population dispersed is means the less profits per person. But the arguer is fails to consider other alternative facets. For one thing, maybe Sylva's residents were concentrate in few areas, while those areas were far away each other. If this is the case, the delivery service should not cost too much than the other states. For another thing, even if the population is really disperse severely, it does not indicate that the total number of Sylva's consumers will be less than the Urba ones. Then, through the advantage of total number of customers to counterbalance the less profits per person  the whole benefits from Sylva might be no less than benefits from Urba.

Furthermore, the argument states that due to the local residents of Sylva prefer to local TV programs, so they are expected that they do not ( pony ) very possiblely care for National Daily News. However, the arguer provides no evidence dearly substantiate this assertion. More often than not, TV viewers are accustomed to (positively) receiving TV programs passively because they need following the TV ( departments ) station programs' broadcasting tendencies (inclination). Therefore, if most Sylva's TV programs limited in local news, then these residents must have no more choice.
82
Finally, the arguer fails to provide sound information about the Urba's readers. Although ND news happily to cover Urba's local news, it does not indicate that the residents of Urba are favor in it for return. Maybe those people are indifferent in the both local news and national news, or majority of them only love watching TV. Consequently, the arguer is over emphasizes the disadvantages of Sylva but ignores the disadvantages of Urba. It is entirely possible that the condition in Urba is worse if comparing with Sylva.
可怜的结尾
In sum, the argument is not reasoning as it stands. In my view, there is no reason to focus on the consumers in Urba, and there are sorts of reasons to further evaluate the concrete condition of Sylva. Moreover, the arguer must recognize that he or she was established an improper correlation between TV viewers’ inclination and News paper readers’ favor. ( ffinity )

To begin with, there is an unconvincing speculation that the more widely population dispersed is means the less profits per person. But the arguer is fails to consider other alternative facets. For one thing, maybe Sylva's residents were concentrate in few areas,或者该州的交通非常便利,运输的花费很低 while those areas were far away each other. If this is the case, the delivery service should not cost too much than the other states. For another thing, even if the population is really disperse severely, it does not indicate that the total number of Sylva's consumers will be less than the Urba ones.
