51. "Education will be truly effective only when it is specifically designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student."
1.兴趣教育应该建立在综合教育之上。
2. 兴趣教育要分清对象。
3. 兴趣教育没有使资源最优化。
When we talk about the effectiveness of education, it is the purpose of education that we should firstly understand. I believe that the ultimate target of education should be to cultivate qualified generations of citizens who make up the major part of population of a society. In this view of point, the speaker's attitude that most emphasis should be laid on meeting the needs of developing individual's interests is questionable for several reasons because his policy can not serve the aim of education.
First of all, a well educated citizen in any society should be equipped with comprehensive information and knowledge, form abstract scientific theories to ordinary life skills, which will ensure his or her success or even survival in the society. However, a narrow education which is limited in the areas students find their interests will undoubtedly badly influence their growth. Even if a student, for example, who is gifted at mathematics and finds anything else boring, is satisfied by the educators with not only all the necessary books and relative instruments but also a simple curriculum which contains nothing else but mathematics, can we expect him to grow up and become a mathematician when he don't know how to communicate with his colleagues or even how to deal with his own ordinary life? In sum, a student should be taught various courses rather than the lessons they like in order to live in the society and then to be preeminent in a certain area. Otherwise, education will be meaningless, let alone effective.
In addition, though it is necessary to provide students with good guide in the lessons they prefer for the purpose that more experts in various areas will emerge, educators should think carefully about when to offer these extra training. For preliminary students, who for the first time in their lives contact with the wonderful realm of various knowledge, and whose physiology are not mature enough, they usually have little coherent interests in the same subject for a long time. Therefore, the curriculum based on their hobbits is unwarranted for them to be well educated. In contrast, for the high school students who have got enough basic knowledge in a wide range of courses and have been equipped with a relatively matured mental state, their interests are more stable, and extra introduction in their favorite lessons will be of much help for them to develop their own way in the future.
Moreover, for many countries, especially those developing ones, the best way to maximum the value of the limited education funds is to give equal chance for everyone to be educated rather than to cultivate some of the citizens to be elites while let the other to be illiterate. Obviously, the common method which is characterized by teaching students with the same curriculum for everyone is much more economic than providing different lessons to each of them according to their interests. In fact, the common teaching method is what developed countries used before they had got enough money to support an advanced education system.
In conclusion, from a more comprehensive perspective, it is not always effective to educative students by meeting their need and interests. In some circumstance, we should first consider the need of the whole society and then the development of the individual. At the same time, the different growing stage of students is another factor that should influence the teaching method.
