Agree
In history, we learn lots of great people. Generally speaking, the greatness is judged by those who live after them.
1.  Great Scientists, the principles or phenomena are usually be recognized and admitted many years after they were first discovered. Example, (Einstein, the theory of relativity;Mendel, mendel's law in genetics).
2.  In the field of Art, Franz Schubert, J.S.Bach lived in poverty; Vincent Van Gogh only sold out one of his masterpiece when he was alive.
3.  The greatness should be proved by time. The contemporaries' opinions are limited. More fashion than the really greatness.

TOPIC: ISSUE36 - "The greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries."
WORDS: 532          TIME: 0:45:00          DATE: 2007-2-3

It could not be denied that our histories are full of great people in every field. From the history of ancient Rome, we learn about Cesar, Octavian; while in the modern history, the stories of the scientist Einstein and the inventor Edison encourage us a lot. Then comes the question that how to define the greatness of individuals and who is qualified to judge them. Generally speaking, the greatness of individuals is able to be evaluated by those who live after them. And the history provides us numerous evidences.

Great scientists, whether in the past or nowadays, are respectful all the time. And their outstanding work must be testified by time and lots of experiments. In additional that both the principles and phenomena should be tried and recurred again and again before they are finally be confirmed as a truism to be studied by people. Therefore, it is impossible for the contemporaries to identify the great exploits. Take Mendel as an example. As the father of genetics, he did thousands of researches and experiments on peas and eventually discovered the Mendel's law. Even though, his papers did not arouse the attention of his contemporaries. It was not until 1900, after he had passed away, did the world recognize his extraordinary work in genetics. Such examples are so commonplace in the history of science that most of us agree that in the field of science, it is more persuasive and practical that the greatness should be judged by the following generation.

It is the same in art. It seems that artists are more likely to be accepted by their contemporaries. The success of Picasso supports the idea. However, there are more evidences and examples that it takes time for people to recognize the intern greatness of an artist. The musician J.S.Bach, the father of western music, lived in poverty all through his life. Ironically, more than two hundreds years after his death, his masterpieces are considered the greatest ones by the musicians all over the world. So are Franz Schubert and Vincent Van Gogh. Van Gogh even only sold out one of his masterpiece when he was alive. But now his sunflowers can be sold more than one hundred million dollars in the market. Therefore, in art, much greatness of individuals are discovered when the artists have been already dead while their contemporaries failed to recognize their excellence.

In one word, no matter in which field, the greatness should be proved by time. The contemporaries’ opinions are more like a chasing for fashion than the real greatness. Moreover, their ideas are limited by their knowledge and backgrounds. Sir Newton once said that only standing on the shoulders of giants can we see further and that's why the latter generations could judge the greatness more fair and impersonal. After the scrutiny and validation, only the truly great people can be written into the history.

Consequently, the most cases in history all over the world, the greatness of individuals are decided by the offspring, though the contemporaries may have the different opinions. It is obvious that only by being admitted by those who live after them, the greatness of individuals can be the truly greatness.

限时还是很成功的,大概还留了几分钟查了下错误,不过写的相当混乱……sigh……拍砖吧!而且字数也少了很多……一点都不好……55555

It could not be denied that our histories are full of great people in every field.(history offers us numerous stories of great people in every field) From the history of ancient Rome, we learn about Cesar, Octavian; while in the modern history, the stories of the scientist Einstein and the inventor Edison(不是一个时代的吧) encourage us a lot. Then comes the question that how to define the greatness of individuals and who is qualified to judge them. Generally speaking, the greatness of individuals is able to be evaluated by those who live after them. And the history provides us numerous evidences.

Great scientists, whether in the past or nowadays, are respectful all the time.(are and will be always indebted by human beings for their great contributions to society.) And(没有承接关系) their outstanding work must be testified by time and lots of experiments. In additional that both the principles and phenomena should be tried and recurred(搭配不太合适吧) again and again before they are finally be confirmed as a truism to be studied by people. ( The very greatness of individuals or creative theories , which need longstanding evidence to substantiate, must, however, endure the test of time.) Therefore, it is impossible(有点武断) for the contemporaries to identify the great exploits(exploit是动词,改成 explorations). Take Mendel as an example. As the father of genetics, he did thousands of researches and experiments on peas and eventually discovered the Mendel's law. Even though, his papers did not arouse the attention of his contemporaries.

It is the same in art. It seems that artists are more likely to be accepted by their contemporaries. The success of Picasso supports the idea. However, there are more evidences and examples that it takes time for people to recognize the intern? greatness of an artist. The musician J.S.Bach, the father of western music, lived in poverty all through his life. Ironically, more than two hundreds years after his death, his masterpieces are considered(started to be recognized as) the greatest ones by the musicians all over the world. So are Franz Schubert and Vincent Van Gogh. Van Gogh even only sold out one of his masterpieces when he was alive. But now his sunflowers can be sold more than one hundred million dollars in the market. (Van Gogh 的画好象没这么随便在市场上就卖了吧)Therefore, in art field, much greatness of individuals are discovered when the artists have been already dead while their contemporaries failed to recognize their excellence.

In one word, no matter in which field,(只举了几个例子,不能概括到各个领域) the greatness should be proved by time. The contemporaries’ opinions are more like a chasing?雕刻?如果是追逐的话用chase就行,老美都这么说,chase也是名词 for fashion than the real greatness. Moreover, their ideas are limited by their knowledge and backgrounds. Sir Newton once said that only standing on the shoulders of giants can we see further and that's why the latter generations could judge the greatness more fair and impersonal应该用副词.
