TOPIC: ISSUE151 - "High-speed electronic communications media, such as electronic mail and television, tend to prevent meaningful and thoughtful communication."
WORDS: 560 TIME: 0:43:18 DATE: 2007-2-5
Does the so-called 'High-speed electronic communications media', particularly the electronic mail and television, have chilling effects on meaningful and thoughful communication, as the speaker asserts? In my view, this media benefits people greatly, but has some negative effects as well, which is mostly the result of the improper use by people.
With the respect to the television, which is one of the most important entertainments in our daily lives, the chilling effects on the communication are obvious. Just consider so many advertisments and soap operas in the television, which are far away from thoughtful and will distract the attention of peoplr to the images and other unthoughful points. As to the quantity of information conveyed by the television, people can only receive ideas passively, even have no chance to consider carefully about what is behind the information. Lives are replete with examples of the children who have little ability to communicate with others after sitting in front of the screen year after year. Besides, many people who want to avoid talking with others often turn to the television. It is certainly not the television's fault. However, one-way communication will be limited more or less.
As to the electronic mails, which has almost replaced the letters nowadays, the effects are mostly positive. Helped by the e-mails, people can communicate with friends on the other pole of the earth conveniently. The mails can be reveived even within a second, only after a click to the button. It is easy and convenient that makes the communication easier and more efficient than ever before. Furthermore, different from talking face-to-face, writing e-mails can avoid deciding curtly. People have enough time to decide whether sending this mail or rewriting it. The thoughful communication can prevent some of the mistakes just like bolting out[k1] .
Moreover, there are many other High-speed electronic communications media, such as the web. Though the network, Internet, for example, people can easily communicate with each other. Consider the long-distance study, and the electronic conference. People can 'meet' and talk with each other even staying at home. With this respect, it is easy for the meaningful and thoughtful ideas to form and communicated. However, nowadays, the web is another entertainment besides the television, as it provides people the chance to contact masses of unselected information, most of which can not provide deep thought. Imagine communicating with a stranger in the web and talking something useless or even forged in order to have fun, how can the thoughful ideas come about?
Although there are many negative effects the High-speed electronic communications media bringing to us, the reason is based on not the technique but the improper use by people. Consider the role television and web playing when people feel boring and having nothing to do. Incorrectly used, even books can cause similar consequence such as preventing thoughtful communication. As to the masses useless information they conveyed, it is also decided by people themselves. Whereas the technique brings many negative effects to people, it is not the technique's fault.
In sum, it can not be denied that the High-speed electronic communications media really prevents meaningful and thoughtful communication between people. However, if people vary the way they using the media, and do something to avoid the chilling effects, this media will surly promote the daily lives of all the people, as well as the development of the technique and society.
