Issue203 “The best way to understand the character of a society is to examine the character of the men and women that the society choose as its heroes or its heroines.”

Whether examining the character of heroes and heroines in a society is the best way to understand the character of it is complex and controversial. While the speaker asserts so, in my view, I agree with the speaker insofar heroes and heroines represent the character of the society they lived in most cases, However, in some cases, heroes and heroines do not reflect the general character of the society, and other ways may be better in helping us to understand the character of the society.

First of all, it is true that in some cases, we can learn the values of the society through examining the character of heroes and heroines, because that heroes or heroines are always ones who were worshiped and admired by a majority of ordinary people. For supporting examples, one only needs to consider these heroes and heroines in history from western society to eastern society. In American, the story of Martin Luther King who was granted the Nobel Prize for his great contribution in pursuing Negroes’ right reflects advocates of freedom and equality in America society. Similarly, in Chinese, the story of Feng Lei who is always ready to help others even sacrificing him own benefits reflects the advocates of the sense of self-sacrifice for the interests of the group or the whole nation. In shorts, to some extents, heroes or heroines represent some valuable character of the society.

However, we should be aware that not each hero or heroes can truly reflect society's values. It is true when it comes to the heroes and heroines in academic filed or in gymnastic filed, because they are famous for their distinguishing personal gifts in particular field. An aptly example to illustrate this point is Chongzhi Zhu ,a famous mathematician and  astronomer  in China ,was be consider a hero for his calculation for the rate of circumference. However, Which characters of the society we can learn from his experience? No. We only get some information about ancient mathematic and astronomy but get no any things about the general character of that time. Similarly, studying the heroes in gymnastic field we also only find that they have excellent personal skills but find some social characters. All in all, some heroes or heroines may unnecessarily represent the character of the society.
In the final analysis, studying the character of heroes and heroines is not the only way to understand the character of a society. After all, character of a society contain abundant contents and can be embodied in kinds of fields including political, economical, cultures and so on. We can not only rely on studying heroes or heroines' character to know the society. In fact, there are many ways to understand one society's values and characters such as film, books, music and so on. For example, from works and thoughts of Confucius, western people can better understand characters of Chinese, such as reverence toward teachers and senior people. Consequently, studying of historical books plays an important role currently.
To sum up, from what have been discussed above, we can safely make a conclusion that studying heroes or heroines is an effective way to study characters of society but not the only way.
