ssue 31 “Money spent on research is almost always a good investment, even when the results of that research are controversial.”
1 Admittedly, research benefit to the development of society.
2 Some research is beyond times, it is hard to determine its value when it is proposed. In fact,
3 However, when it comes to some controversial research, government should be superintended.
Whether investment in research is always good investment even though the results of the research are controversial as the speaker asserts? In my view, I agree with the speaker insofar in research poses positive effects to the society and controversy and uncertain are the nature of research. Nevertheless, some certain research poses certain risks that the government must be careful to invest in it.
First of all, research plays an important role in the development of society. Research impels the society advance. For one thing, research makes our life more convenient. Take the internet for example, the widely application of internet makes it possible to communicate with others in any place, buy anything at home, work at home but not need to go to office. For another thing, research also can solve some social problems such as environmental problems, energy source problems. The achievements in environmental research provide a good way to deal with waste, such as recycling technology which can extract or reuse useful materials from garbage thereby decreasing waste’ harm to environment. Similarly, research in exploring energy source makes it become true that humankinds are apart from danger of lacking energy in the future. In short, research greatly benefits our life and the whole society. In term of this point, I believe that investment in research is indispensable and worthwhile.
In addition, it is ineluctable that some valuable research may be controversial when it is proposed. This point is determined by the nature of research which is a process of exploring unknown for true and lasting solution for problems. At the same time, the value of some research become practical application needs a long time. For instance, When Einstein proposed "special theories of relativity revolutionized", it seemed that few people be aware it would formed a theoretical base for the exploitation of atomic energy. When Luogeng Hua, a famous mathematician in China, began to research the principle of "1+1", perhaps few people can understood this action not mention to considered its future great contribution to the promotion of economy. Therefore, given the characteristic of research, even if some research is controversial, government also should support and invest in.
However, for some search which would necessary brings adversely influence to society, government should superintend even limit these rather than invest in them. Take Cloning for example, it is sure that widely application of cloning technology would disturb the orders of society. After all, it is hard to imagine that what the society would be when one person can be made by a scientist in his/her laboratory. Besides, some chemical or biological research also may threaten the security of society such as the chemical research Japan conducted during the World War II。Therefore, I think the government should be cautious to invest these research..
In sum, for what has been discussed, we can safely make a conclusion that research should be emphasized even though some are controversial when they are proposed, at the same time, government should limit or control some research which may bring harmful influence to society.
