Does nonmainstream areas of inquiry such as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits meet human needs not addressed by mainstream science so that such inquiry play a vital role in our society? I concede that nonmainstream areas of inquiry do meet certain human needs which are not solved by mainstream science. However, I do believe the drawbacks these nonmainstream areas of inquiry mentioned bring outweigh the merits they offer to the society.

To begin with, as some human needs cannot be met by the mainstream science, people began to seek answers or comfortable solution from such nonmainstream areas of inquiry. This is reasonable, because it is inherent instinct in human to try to provide answers to the questions they meet in life. For instance, in the process of growing up and aging, people have to face some situation in which people have no choice but to make some decisions or choose one path from several alternatives to move on. It is entirely possible that a decision made by a person turns out to be a bad one and may lead to an unfortunate end. In fear of the possibility of ending up sadly, most people are uncertain when it is up to them to decide for themselves. Thus, some people turn to astrology or fortune-telling for guidance, and follow the paths implied by astrology or fortune-telling.

Besides, it is known to all that all human beings will end up in death. However, acknowledging the fact is not as easy as just knowing this; some people are fear of death. As the so-called recycling is unproven by the mainstream science, some people turn to paranormal pursuits for comfort. History can tell us a trail of examples which aptly illustrate their standpoints. Take mammies in Egypt for example. These mammies were made to preserve the bodies of the ruler who believe in a second life. Moreover, some ruler in China believed that some drug could help them prevent aging. Both these example can help to explain some curious phenomenon such as some religions are so popular among people who pursue a second life or believe that their passed lovers have a second life, which is ungrounded by the knowledge of mainstream science as physics, chemistry, psychology, and clinical medicine.

Despite these nonmainstream areas of inquiry can satisfy certain human needs, it is more harmful than helpful to believe their usefulness to our society. Lacking the knowledge on the result of these nonmainstream inquiries, we cannot tell whether the result is right or wrong. After all, we cannot know the precise consequences of the path untaken by just imagining. Nor can we get in touch with or contact with the loved ones we have lost. So people have no idea of the truth about the result of astrology, fortune-telling and psychic and paranormal pursuits provide which therefore feasible for some people with wicked intention to make a fortune on these naive people.

Moreover, believing in such nonmainstream areas may result in a person’s becoming distrust the mainstream science, even assume mainstream science as false and unworthy to get acquainted with, which undoubtedly will impede the intellectual development of the person. To make the matter worse, when the situation spread around, it could be possible that the development of the mainstream science is impeded by these people as well. Beside, people believing in the nonmainstream inquiry may fell it is right to follow the direct of these paranormal pursuits, regardless of whether hurting other people around or not.

To sum up, although nonmainstream areas of inquiry as cited can meet certain human needs, the impact it has on our society is not a pleasing as it stands. In order to fully develop our intellect, it is necessary and wise for us to rely on the mainstream science for solution to our encountered problems in life.
