ARGUMENT17 - The following appeared in a letter to the editor of the Walnut Grove town newspaper.
"Walnut Grove's town council has advocated switching from EZ Disposal (which has had the contract for trash collection services in Walnut Grove for the past ten years) to ABC Waste, because EZ recently raised its monthly fee from $2,000 to $2,500 a month, whereas ABC's fee is still $2,000. But the town council is mistaken; we should continue using EZ. EZ collects trash twice a week, while ABC collects only once. Moreover, EZ-which, like ABC, currently has a fleet of 20 trucks-has ordered additional trucks. Finally, EZ provides exceptional service: 80 percent of respondents to last year's town survey agreed that they were 'satisfied' with EZ's performance."

From the article, we know that Walnut Grove's town council plans to change the EZ disposal, which has had the contract for collecting trash for past ten years but raised its monthly fee $500 higher than before, to ABC Waste, which its fee is still $2,000. The speaker wants to persuade council to continue using EZ for several reasons. But these recommendation are not suffice enough.
To start with, the speaker's first reason is that EZ collects trash twice a week whereas ABC collects only once. As is known to all, the quantity is not equal to quality. If only in Walnut Grove, the trash are so much that once collection per week can not collect all the trash, the more collection should be needed. Otherwise, the additional cost of more working in EZ is a waste.
Secondly, the EZ Disposal has the same number of trucks like ABC has, besides, the EZ has ordered additional trucks. But the speaker ignored this fact, were all these trucks used to collect trash or will these ordered trucks be used to collect trash? 20 trucks that used to collect trash are enough if the number of trash is just a little. Perhaps the EZ use these additional trucks for doing other things, and by the means of raising its monthly fee to compensate for their cost of buying trucks. In addition, how long will the EZ get these additional trucks? One month, one year or much longer? If the EZ cannot immediately get these trucks, it is equally nothing to say.
Finally, the survey is specious that we can not believe totally. Consider, the survey was last year's town survey, Forth of five respondents thought they were satisfied with EZ's performance, the raised monthly fee was executed before the investigation. Nevertheless this is the case, did these survey include overall citizens whose trash are collected by EZ? In addition, the respondents were satisfied with EZ’s performance, but it is very possible that the ABC’s performance is better than EZ’s, just because the respondents are not familiar with ABC’s service.
In sum, the speaker’s assertion is unconvincing. To persuade the Walnut Grove's town council continue using EZ Disposal, enough evidence and thorough survey must be needed. |
