51. The following appeared in a medicalnewsletter.
"Doctors have long suspected that secondary infections may keep somepatients from healing quickly after severe muscle strain. This hypothesis hasnow been proved by preliminary results of a study of two groups of patients. The first group of patients, all being treated for muscle injuries by Dr.Newland, a doctor who specializes in sports medicine, took antibioticsregularly throughout their treatment. Their recuperation time was, on average,40 percent quicker than typically expected. Patients in the second group, allbeing treated by Dr. Alton, a general physician, were given sugar pills, although the patients believed they were taking antibiotics. Their averagerecuperation time was not significantly reduced. Therefore, all patients whoare diagnosed with muscle strain would be well advised to take antibiotics aspart of their treatment."
1.作者说是所有病人,而医生说的是某些病人
2.医生说只有严重的病人才需要抗生素
3.作者把医生的假设推广开了,并且实验也有问题
The author’s conclusion that all patients who are diagnosed with muscle strainshould take antibiotics as part of their treatment due to an experiment of twogroups of patients cannot totally convince me.
Firstly, the author assert that allpatients who are diagnosed with muscle strain should take antibiotics, meanwhile, doctor’s suspection is that some patients should take antibiotics toheal quickly. Obviously, the author ignores the content of “some” and “all”.Perhaps, some patients, who diagnosed with muscle strain, are hypersusceptibleto the antibiotics. Or perhaps, some patients need not to take the antibioticsdue to their good condition of healthy. In brief, author cannot determinationall patients need antibiotics.
Secondly, there exist totally differentbetween “severe patient” and “patient have”. Unfortunately, author merges thetwo into one. A person, who gets a cold, probably takes some pillars and willbe fine in two or three days. Nevertheless, another person, who gets a severecold, probably cannot heal merely take some pillars and have a rest for somedays. He\ she may be taken an injection to heal quickly. Similarly, a person, who just injured muscle but not severe, has to need to take antibiotics in mostcases.
Thirdly, the doctor’s conclusion only an assumption, but author expands it. Analogously, an conclusion about medicine, which have experimenton mice till now, are used on people and even all society. Besides, author’s assertionis based on the experiment, which is ambiguous whether about the clearly conditionabout the two groups of patients or about how they were treated during the study, has several flaws. We have no idea about the patients’ age. Undoubtedly, a youngpatient will heal more quickly than old one. Besides, author doesn’t mention anyinformation about the circumstance of treatment. Maybe one group was arranged ina chaotic condition to take the treatment; meanwhile, the other group was treatedin a peaceful surroundings. Obviously, the time, two group would take can be effected.
To sum up, I cannot agree with author unlessauthor provides detailed information about the condition of age, gender, psychosisof the two groups, and the condition of two of doctors, and even another more persuasivestudy about the effective of antibiotics. |
