"The way people look, dress, and act reveals their attitudes and interests. You can tell much about a society's ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people."

The time the statement came into my sight, a joke occurred in my mind:
Suppose there are three girls from different countries--America, Japan, and China. All of them wear the same kind of hat and miniskirt. What would they react if a strong wind suddenly blows?
The answer is: the American girl would use both of her hands to fix her hat from blowing away and happily enjoying the wind; the Japanese girl would use both of her hands to fix her miniskirt from raising up by the wind; the Chinese girl would use one hand to fix her hat while the other fix her miniskirt.

The point here is : Where does the difference in behavior spring from? Social value? Probably.

For Americans, people are mostly open minded. The pursuing of freedom and individuality results in the sex liberation campaign. Girls of the American society, and most of the men in America, seldom have the idea of virtues demanded in ancient feudal countries such as ancient China. What they emphasis is the nature of human being, the equality between men and women. Rooted with the social value, American girls' behavior goes along with it. Most of them are lively and confident. They wear what they like. They enjoy being the center of the attention.

However, the situation in Japan is different. Japan is a andocentric nation. Girls or women in Japan are taught to abide by certain andocentric rules recognized by the society.  Those girls polite to the old and to the male—frequently bowing down, speaking with general voice, walking in quick short steps-- and conservative in public are thought highly of. They girls are compliant and quite in formal occasions, when they are required to wear their traditional kimono and special shoes .Living in such circumstance, the behavior of the Japanese girls in most time is conservative, which reflects much of the Japanese social value.

When it comes to the Chinese girls, things are different. The appearance and behavior of the Chinese reflect most of the ideas and values prevailing in the Chinese society. China used to be a feudal empire for thousands of years, during which period women were mostly looked down upon and women virtues demanding female to conform to the male is regarded as a laws. Though China nowadays is no longer a feudal nation, the feudal values still leave some impact on the modern people. Besides, thrift is considered as virtue of the nation, and property is demanded to be taken care of. That is why the Chinese girl in the girl would act that way: on one hand, she would not have her thigh seem by the public; on the other hand, she cherishes her hat as her property--both actions reflect the Chinese social values.

From the above, we have no difficult to see how the social ideas or value and the behavior or appearance of individuals interacts--the former affects the latter, while the latter reflects the former. Just as an individual's attitudes and interests can be revealed by his or her look, dress and act, the general appearance and behavior of the society reveals the social ideas and values.

The point here is : Where does the difference in behavior spring from? Socialvalue? Probably.

For Americans, people are mostly open minded. The pursuing of freedom andindividuality results in the sex liberation campaign.[根据我所知sexliberation campaign是由于他们米国发动越南战争和黑人的歧视在那段混乱的时期形成的,不是你说的自由和开放造成滴]Girlsof the American society, and most of the men in America[直接把这2个和起来不就完了吗?你这样显得句子没信息量], seldom have the idea of virtues[没有美德意识?应该是没有那方面的传统吧] demanded in ancient feudal countriessuch as ancient China. What they emphasis [emphasize]is the nature of human being, the equality between men and women. Rooted withthe social value, American girls' behavior[+s] goes along with it. Most of them are lively andconfident. They wear what they like. They enjoy being the center of theattention.

However, the situation in Japanis different. Japanis a andocentric nation. Girls or women in Japan are taught to abide bycertain andocentric rules recognized by the society.  Those girlspolite to the old and to the male—frequently bowingdown, speaking with general [gentle]voice, walking in quick short steps---andconservative in public are thought highly of.[很高的评价吗?][你这里的破折号用法不对,这样里面的修饰内容就变成修饰male的了] They girls are compliant and quite in formal occasions, when theyare required to wear their traditional kimono and special shoes .Living in suchcircumstance, the behavior[+s] of the Japanese girls in most time isconservative, which reflects much of the Japanese social value.

When it comes to the Chinese girls, things are different. The appearance andbehavior of the Chinese reflect most of the ideas and values prevailing in theChinese society. Chinaused to be a feudal empire for thousands of years, during which period womenwere mostly looked down upon and women virtues demanding female to conform tothe male is regarded as a laws.[单复数混乱] Though China nowadaysis no longer a feudal nation, the feudal values still leave some impact on themodern people. Besides, thrift is considered as virtue of the nation, andproperty is demanded to be taken care of. That is why the Chinese girl in the girl 我不明白你的表达,能解释下吗?] would act that way: on one hand, she would not have her thigh seen by the public; on the other hand, shecherishes her hat as her property--both actions reflect the Chinese socialvalues.

From the above, we have no difficult to see how the social ideas or value andthe behavior or appearance of individuals interacts--the former affects thelatter, while the latter reflects the former. Just as an individual's attitudesand interests can be revealed by his or her look, dress and act, the generalappearance and behavior of the society reveals the social ideas and values.

You can tell much about a society's ideas andvalues by observing the appearance and behavior of its people,而忽略了Theway people look, dress, and act reveals their attitudes and interests。
